recently thrifted, cat lady edition

Owning a kitty cat has opened up a whole new world of things to thrift for. First I got a cute glitter-kitty piece of artwork. Then the “I ♥ Cats” knick-knack. I swear, before you know it, my daily uniform will be leggings and kitty sweatshirts. It’s a slippery slope people, I’m not joking. As evidence,  here are a couple recent buys I’m posting for no other reason than to record the beginning of my fall into complete cat-lady craziness.

1. Boxed set of cat stationery (brand name: Fancy Feast!), 29 cents at Bibles for Missions, aka the cheapest thrift in town!

2. I only found one of these creatively named “cat dishes,” at the Salvation Army but one of the employees saw me carrying it around and ushered me to the aisle where the matching dish was. I love how the kitty’s tag on the inside reads “My Kitty.”

Now that the cat’s out of the bag (couldn’t. resist.) about my embarrassing thrifting obsession, why don’t you tell me about yours? I won’t judge you, if you don’t judge me.

{source}

Here’s a quick round-up of thrift-store sales happening around town this weekend!

Savers
Tomorrow only, take 50 percent off all used merchandise.  Stores will be open bright and early at 7 a.m. all the way until 9 p.m.

Unique and Valu Thrift
VIP card-holders will get 50 percent off their entire purchases tomorrow. Stores will be open extra-long, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Hidden Treasures Thrift Store
Save 30 percent on anything in the store tomorrow (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Goodwill
In celebration of their new stores in Blaine and Rogers, shoppers at either of those two locations will save 50 percent on all blue, green and yellow tagged items. (I’ve had readers tell me they’ve found some sweet vintage at the Rogers location, FYI!)

Since I have to be to work at 9 a.m., I think I’ll most likely be hitting up a single Savers and then maybe a Unique over my lunch break.

Happy shopping y’all!

mighty swell + design*sponge = photo booth magic

Just about a month ago, Rae and I had the opportunity to create the photo backdrop for Design*Sponge’s book party at the Anthropologie store in Edina. The 8 x 8 backdrop needed to be portable, yet sturdy, pretty from a distance yet photogenic up close. After a week of brainstorming, we settled on the idea of a trinket wall. We thrifted the trinkets (or doo-dads, as I like to call them) from Unique Thrift stores.  From dolls to magnets, beads to toys, coasters to tiny plates, game pieces to buttons, nothing was safe from our glue guns.

The backdrop was made from plywood and scrap wood I had stashed in my garage from my bathroom remodel. We washed it with a light mint green stain (Minwax Water Based Wood Stain in Antique Jade, to be exact) which allowed the pretty grain of the wood to come through.  After Rae traced the diamonds on the dry plywood, we hauled it piece by piece into my living room, where we proceeded to sit and glue trinkets and watch Parks & Recreation. Approximately 100 years later…we were done!

The day of the signing, at literally the crack of dawn, we hauled it over to Anthro and did a few last minute touch ups. It was such a relief when the set-up was done. And I have to say, I think it turned out pretty awesome.

You can see for yourself in this gallery of photobooth photos from the signing.

Many thanks to Grace and Amy from Design*Sponge (pictured above) for giving us the opportunity. Although I might be fine with never seeing a glue gun again as long as I live, it sure was fun to put this together.

clickin’ around, vol. 25

I have one bare wall in my home I’m determined to fill this fall. This sick giant cross stitch created by crafter extraordinaire Jessica Decker would be just the thing.

Ahhh, this duck hunter sweater Bianca thrifted is THE COOLEST. I loved that game when I was young.

Some fellow cat ladies at Mighty Swell introduced me to The Cat Scan tumblr this weekend. Thank you!

Tonight’s dinner followed one of my favorite eating philosophies, light dinner =heavy dessert. Butternut squash pumpkin seed rice paper rolls for din din &  this apple cider bread pudding for dessert.

Myths vs. realities in blogging. Lotsa truth in this here post!

If you visited Mighty Swell last Saturday and went home with a goody bag of homemade caramel corn, you’re lucky b/c that sh*t was tasty. If you want to know how to make it at home, here’s the recipe we used.

Like “The Royal Tennenbaums?” Then you need to see this video. I had no clue the location, i.e. home, featured in the movie shaped the entire script. Cray cray.

vintage paper packs

Over the weekend, my friend Andrea and I assembled a bunch of vintage paper packs to sell at Mighty Swell over the holiday season. Each one is one-of-a-kind, but all contain a sweet mix of stationery, postcards, book pages, game pieces and other miscellaneous ephemera I’ve been squirreling away over the years. They’ll make great gifts for any vintage-loving scrapbook-er, art journa-ler, collage artist or stationery nerd. I unearthed some gems while we assembling them. How precious are these little critter cards?

Anywho, that’s just a peek. I’ll be selling them the shop over the holidays for anywhere from $4-7, depending on the size and contents. Gotta love affordable gifts, vintage ones especially!

I love the simple bouquets shared on Found While Walking. So unfussy and fresh.

It’s discouraging as a vintage reseller when people don’t realize the labor that goes into getting some garments ready to sell. This journey of a dress post illustrates how time-intensive the process sometimes can be.

These caffeine patches are the most genius idea on the face of the planet. Want.

I’m jealous of Micaela’s recent thrift-store score.

How cool is this stupid simple hair comb makeover DIY? I’ll definitely have to try it soon.

While I’ve sworn off bourbon for life (or at least the rest of October), I do want to try this recipe ASAP.

It figures that as soon as I step away from tumblr, up pops a new Dolly Parton blog. Of course I love every post!

Bookmark these tips for finding one’s passion for a listless, lazy day. So many good ideas!

And lastly, two words: SEQUIN GRAFFITI.

how to: bake pumpkin bread like tammy wynette

I’ve been thinking about Tammy Wynette a lot lately. Maybe it’s because I changed my work computer’s desktop to this last Friday, or maybe it’s because I’m saying her name 100 times a day, scolding my naughty kitty, her green-eyed namesake. So last week, when I came upon a couple handwritten recipes of hers on the Country Music Hall of Fame’s website (check them out here), I decided her pumpkin bread would be the perfect baking project. Like most of my go-to recipes, it’s pretty simple and pretty delicious.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

3 1/2 cups self-rising flour
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 eggs, lightly beaten
3 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups mashed pumpkin
1 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts

HOW TO MAKE (ACCORDING TO TAMMY)

Mix dry ingredients, blend other ingredients, except nuts. Mix alternately and add nuts. Grease two Bundt pans and fill. Bake approximately 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

Then try to fend off your cat and dog while you enjoy a slice and a glass of milk.

Obviously, I’d recommend baking these babies with Tammy on. I’ve been listening to her “Another Lonely Song” album a lot. Every song is a winner.

tonight’s agenda

{source}

Holy canoli, am I happy my work day is just about done. This morning when I got into the office, a box of books from Amazon arrived, and it’s been killing me slowly to not be able to tear right into them. So, after swimming tonight, you’ll find me curled up under the covers, kitty by my side, tea mug in one hand and book in the other. I’m most excited to start Carl Ann Harris’ autobiography, Storms: My Life with Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. Anyone else get Christmas Eve excited for new books? I know I’m not the only one!
