heads up: mighty swell’s rummage & bake sale

Friends!

If you’re lookin’ for something fun to do tomorrow morning, please swing by Mighty Swell’s rummage sale, part of the Standish, Ericsson & Cocoran Neighborhood Garage Sales and a fundraiser for Rae’s wedding and honeymoon. It’s our second year participating in this awesome event, and yet again, we’ve cleaned the clutter from our kitchens, book shelves, walls and closets to pack the shop’s sidewalk FULL. It’s scary who much stuff we’ve got to sell. And, seeing as we’re thrifty ladies who love bargain hunting at rummages ourselves, we’ve priced everything to move. Tons of things costs less a buck and we’ve got bins of 25 and 50 cent items that are brimming with cute clothes, accessories and shoes. It’ll basically be bargain central, with a heavy dose of vintage. Take a minute to peep our Craigslist listing here and bear in mind that it’s truly just scratching the surface.

New this year is the bake sale element! If we’re buds on Pinterest, you know I’ve been plotting what to make for weeks on my bake sale board. Tough decisions were made, and the final winners include Nutella puppy chow, Rolo bars, coffee cake muffins and last but not least, strawberry-rhubarb hand pies with fresh rhubarb from my garden. Rae’s also going to be putting her trusty mixer through the paces tonight, and if you’ve ever sampled her baked goods, you know they’ll be out-of-this-world good. Even her mom’s pitching in some treats! (Cute.)

There are 150+ rummage sales going on the surrounding neighborhoods, so get your bargain hunting boots on and come over! You can pick up sale maps tomorrow morning at the Standish Ericsson Neighborhood Association office, Citizen Cafe, Hudson’s Ace Hardware or the Corner Mini Mart. We’ll be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., although it’s likely that we’ll be setting stuff out early.

I hope to see y’all there!

xo,

Meghan

P. S. If you want to like, share or RSVP on Facebook, the event’s listing’s here.

♥ I can’t stop myself from re-pinning goodies from Quincy West lately. Take the image above of Priscilla Presley for instance..what a fox.

♥ Amen to all of this, right?

♥ Many thanks to Maegen for connecting me to La Perla lingerie’s stunning spring/summer campaign. From the beehive hairdos to the impeccable makeup, it’s all so, so pretty.

Are y’all following Industry of One yet? They sure do find some inspiring people to profile, and the photos accompanying each Q & A are stunning enough to stand alone.

I don’t know about you, but I found this video featuring Betty Glasgow, hairdresser for the movie “A Hard Day’s Night,” totally interesting.

♥ Gosh darnit if I don’t want a new pair of jeans after reading Adore Vintage’s love letter to Levi’s post. (Bird Trouble’s bell bottoms also got me to lustin’ this week.)

If I had a limitless checking account, I would snap up every single one of these Fela-inspired purses. For real.

♥ Really digging the looks of this iPhone app that lets users feel what the weather’s like by using warm and cool colors, instead of hour-by-hour projections.

I really enjoyed this slideshow of retro hairstyles and their accompanying how-tos. Very useful stuff.

Speaking of hair, how pretty is this half-up, half-down, half rolled style that Alli from The Vintage Valley rocked. I’m lovin’ it.

And lastly, in food news, here are three recipes I’ve tried and loved this week: Mexican black bean burgers, strawberries ‘n’ cream pie pops and spaghetti in garlic gravy with cherry tomatoes, chicken & herbs. I’ve really been enjoying cooking at home since I got back from my trip!

I hope your week’s are shaping up all right so far. It’s another busy one for me, with Mighty Swell’s rummage/bake sale around the corner, but I’m hanging in. Some weeks that’s all you can do!

guest post: summery quinoa salad recipe

Hey dearies, happy Monday!

To kick off the week, I’m turning the blog over to the lovely Jen Cortez, co-owner of The Hive Salon and blogger behind Midwest Vaygun. I asked Jen to share one of her favorite healthy dishes with us this week and the menu she came up with sounds downright divine, especially considering my recent barbecue bender in Kansas City. I’ve really been scaling back on the amount of meat I eat since my trip, and this protein-packed quinoa salad would be the perfect for toting to work for lunch. I hope you enjoy!!

xo, Meghan

Summer is closing in on us fast, and with the soaring temps comes one of my most favorite things—outdoor eating! The only problem is that picnics and barbecues are often filled with repetitious staples. I believe you can only have so much potato salad, right? I love Asian cuisine, but far too often my love of far-eastern goodness takes a back seat in the summer (except for those nights where take-out is the only retreat from a hot stove, or hotter backyard) for more seasonal fare. I decided to put an end to the monotony of usual summer stamples by “summer-izing” some of my favorite Asian flavors. These are perfect for bringing to any outdoor get together!

Cold Quinoa “Fried Rice” Salad with Tofu

Quinoa doesn’t harden when cold like most rice varieties, making it great for chilled salads. although mangoes and avocados aren’t traditional in fried rice, their textures and flavors compliment the spicy and salty flavors of the quinoa and add extra heft to the dish.

What You Need

1 1/2 c. quinoa, rinsed well
2 1/2 c. water
1 20-ounce block Wildwood Tofu, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 large mango
2 avocados
1 bundle scallions
2-3 t. Sriracha hot sauce
3 T. gluten-free soy sauce
1 1/2 t. palm sugar, or regular sugar
2 t. fresh ginger, grated
1 T. coconut oil
1/2 c. loosely packed Thai basil and cillantro
bean sprouts, peanuts, and limes for garnish

Begin by bringing the water to boil in a tall pot. Add a few pinches of salt and the quinoa. Reduce to a simmer, and cook until all of the water has been absorbed, this should take roughly 15 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes and fluff with a fork. Spread the quinoa out on a cookie sheet and pop into the fridge to chill,  or the freezer if needed ASAP.

Next, take the tofu and place in on a lightly oiled cookie sheet and pop it into your toaster oven *if you don’t have a toaster oven you can use the regular oven but you’ll really heat your house up. otherwise, you can pan fry the tofu if you don’t mind the extra oil. Crank your toaster oven onto it’s highest setting and bake the bejeezus out of it, or until golden brown and lightly crispy. Place the tofu with the quinoa to cool it down.

Halve and pit the avocados and the mango and cube before tossing into a large, portable bowl that has a lid. Thinly slice the basil, cilantro, and scallions and add them to the bowl as well.

Now you can go ahead and whisk together the soy, ginger, sriracha, sugar and coconut oil (melt first if needed).

Toss the chilled quinoa and tofu with the rest of your prepped ingredients, and fold in the dressing. Taste and adjust to your preference. Sprinkle with with crushed peanuts, bean sprouts, and lime wedges. Serve with spicy grilled pak choy.

Spicy Korean Grilled Pak Choy

Feel free to swap out the pak choy for larger bok choy  or another bitter green, like broccolini.

What You Need

1 lb. pak choy/baby bok choy
4 T. gluten free soy sauce
2 t. tamarind paste
1 T. sesame oil
3 T. rice wine vinegar
2+ T. garlic chili sauce

Rinse the pak choy and cut in half length wise. Whisk together remaining marinade components, taste for heat, and pour over the pak choy. Marinate up to a full day. Grill vegetables until tender, basting occasionally with leftover marinade. It was raining when I last made this so I used my cast iron grill pan, but I think it tastes best when it’s made outdoors.

life lately

This week’s been a busy one. Working all day, busting butt each and every night. I’ve been occupied mostly with readying my humble little home for the arrival of a very important guest…my boyfriend’s beautiful daughter Ian, who flew in from California late last night. She’s visited a few times before, but this time it’s different. Because this time, she’s here in Minneapolis for good.

It’s no secret that I absolutely love living on my own. But to be able to welcome her to this city, this next chapter, and provide her with a comfortable place to stay while she gets her bearings? That makes my heart nearly burst with happy. And that kind of joy makes the small sacrifices required when sharing one’s home so. totally. worth. it. Anyway, speaking of hearts bursting, we’re off to visit her grandma, aunties, uncle and cousins in St. Cloud. It couldn’t be a more beautiful, sunshine-y afternoon for a reunion…

I hope you have the most lovely of weekends, dears!

kansas city adventures

I have just a few photos from Kansas City to share with you this morning. All in all, it was an amazing trip. We ate barbecue. We honky tonked. We thrifted. We ate more barbecue. We toured Boulevard Brewery. We shopped at the cutest dress shop. We lounged by multiple pools. And then we thrifted some more. And ate more barbecue. And I loved every minute of it.

I cannot wait to go back!

How were your long weekends? Wonderful, I hope. Are you, too, finding it hard to get back into the swing of things this week? I’m super happy to be back but dang, is my to-do list daunting.

happy weekend!

{source}

By the time you read this, my ladies and I will already be on our way to Kansas City. Our itinerary is packed with poolside lounging, eating, (dive) bar hopping and of course, hitting the thrift store scene hard. I so appreciated all the advice and tips y’all shared with me! We’ve got The Woodyard on our short list, as well as Oklahoma Joe’s, Gates and a healthy couple hands full of thrift stores. Bar-wise, we’ll be playing things by ear mostly, but we’ve collectively decided that a visit to Flo’s Poke-A-Dot Lounge is an absolute must, based solely on the name alone. I promise to take tons of photos along the way!

Have the most wonderful of weekends, beautiful readers. Be safe!

P.S. Zhenya, your three-day break might be a little brighter, knowing you were picked at random to win the set of vintage styling manuals I was giving away this week. Congrats lady! Shoot me your address over the weekend and I’ll drop those babies in the mail just as soon as I get back. And of course, thanks to everyone who entered. I’ve got some stellar giveaways in the works for June, so keep your eyes out…

how to: make the best beans…ever!

Seeing as Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of summer, I thought today would be an appropriate time to share my favorite recipe for toting along to barbecues and potlucks: Susan Crawford’s “Best Beans…Ever!” This gem of a recipe’s been in my possession for 11 years now, passed on to me by Susan Crawford, mom to one of my dear high school friends, Jane. In the decade-plus since high school graduation (!!!), I’ve brought this dish to more barbecues than I can count, and it always nets mad compliments. Enough rambling though…here’s how to make it yourself.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

1 lb. ground beef (or a little more), browned & drained
1 lb. bacon, browned & drained
1 large and 1 small can Busch’s Baked Beans (don’t drain)
1 can great northern beans (rinsed and drained)
1 can butter beans (don’t drain)
1 can spicy chili beans (don’t drain)
1 cup brown sugar
1 envelope Lipton Onion soup mix
1 cup barbecue sauce

HOW TO MAKE

Stir all ingredients together and bake at 350° (or 325°) for 1-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

So. Super. Easy.

Here’s what it looks like before baking.

In truth, it doesn’t look that much different when it’s done. I haven’t fiddled with the recipe much, seeing as it’s pretty perfect as is, BUT, I do want to give The Pioneer Woman’s bacon-topping technique a try on them some time. Bacon on top, bacon on the inside…bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon.

If you give this recipe a whirl over the course of the summer, please do tell me what you think!

heads up: one-day sales at savers and unique thrift stores

{source}

Tomorrow, both Savers and the Unique family of thrift stores are having one-day sales. At Savers, club card members will save 30% on clothing, shoes, accessories and goodies in the bed and bath department. (You can find the store nearest you here.) Customers visiting Unique thrift stores (and Valu thrift in St. Paul) will get a hefty 50% discount on clothing, shoes, accessories and bed and bath supplies, but only if you have an I M Unique card. (You can find a complete list of their locations here.) Signing up for both savings clubs is totally free…just don’t try to register for an account on a sale day. That’s a no-no.

Happy hunting!

treat yo self tuesday

Last night, I took myself on a date to the spa. I’m usually pretty good at resisting the many deals and offers that roll through my Inbox, but when I saw Spot Spa’s spring detox special earlier this month, honest to God, I booked it the very next day…because I know a good deal when I see one.

This wonder of a package includes a lemon-infused foot soak and full-body dry brushing followed by a 60-minute massage. The kicker is that you get to take home a full-sized bottle of fancy body oil home with you—Weleda’s Birch Cellulite Oil or  Dr. Hauschka’s Lemon Lemongrass Body Oil (both cost around $30 at the co-op)—all for $150.

My practitioner Sarah was truly a down-to-earth delight. True to form, I asked lots of questions about beauty, health and wellness, including “what’s the proper technique for dry skin-brushing?” (I’ve been super intrigued since reading that it’s one of Miranda Kerr’s beauty secrets) and “is my going to kill me?” She had tons of good, honest input and sent me home with tons of tips and little nuggets of wisdom. Did I mention that she’s not afraid to dig really deep into those tensed-up, tender parts? Because she totally did, and I’m all the better for it. (Thank you Sarah!)

I left the spa feeling blissful, relaxed and deeply grounded, which is exactly what I was hoping for. And although I know $150 is nothing at all to sniff at, I felt like for what I got, that price is a fantastic value. The Spring Detox special is available at both Spot Spa locations now through June 15th. You have to call to book it…the number for the Northeast location is 612.331.4182 and the Uptown location can be reached at 612.823.spot. It feels good to treat yo self!
