guest post: teacup vintage on dressing for december

Hey lovelies!

Today, the wonderful gals of Teacup Vintage are takin’ over the blog. I’m so excited that they tackled a conundrum we Minnesota girls face annually: Dressing cute when it’s -20 outside. As expected, they came up with some super adorable looks for all kinds of holiday situations. If I had it my way, I’d be cozying up to a roaring fire in look #3 every night now through March.
I hope you all enjoy it, too!

Dressing for December, Outfits & Inspiration

In the winter wonderland of December, we want outfits that say cozy with style. Personally, we tend to mix vintage and modern clothing, with lots of feminine details that add a touch of softness (think ruffles, pearly buttons, fur, velvet, and silk) thrown in for good measure. Since the Mighty Swell sale is just around the corner, we pulled pieces from our winter collection to put together looks for holiday style inspiration. Find these Teacup Vintage pieces and more at Tarnish & Gold this weekend.

Look #1: Under the Mistletoe

Classic colors, red and black, can be played up with a multitude of textures. This look is ladylike and classy with a hint of sex appeal (you choose how high to button it up): a red ruffled polka-dotted blouse paired with a black velvet high-waisted skirt, black tights, and lace-up heels. Add another dimension with a multicolored floral clutch.

Look #2: Date at the Ice Rink

Winter dates can be fun and stylish with the right outerwear. Vintage coats are unique and always in style: this one is an ivory wool blend with pearly brown buttons and a belted waist. Top off the look with soft gloves, a cream muff with brown velvet lining, cable knit tights, and ice skates of course!

Look #3: Sipping Cocoa by the Fire

This outfit says “cuddle me” and is so cozy and cute. We are loving novelty sweaters this season, especially those featuring animals. This look features an oversized sweater with two puppies in love, jeans tucked into cream stockings, with tall brown woven leather boots. Complete the look with a large vintage ivory handbag. Extra marshmallows please!

Look #4: As the Ball Drops

On New Year’s Eve, anything goes. We wanted to sparkle it up so we paired a lovely black 50’s party dress with gold tights, a black sequined head wrap, a small metallic handbag, and heels. We love mixing and matching metal tones with a black base piece. So fun, easy, and adds an extra splash of fanciness to a look.

Check the Teacup Vintage blog for more style inspiration, we will be updating it regularly!

Howdy ho!

I’m honored to be guest blogging over at Spoils of Wear today, while Jill’s visiting her fam down South. Check out my post here. I wrote about one of my most favorite things to wear in the winter—FUR—and also shared some of my tried-and-true tips for thrifting vintage furs. And of course, since it’s Wednesday, I’m also over at Beauty Bets. My topic for the week? How to get the royal treatment from your beauty service providers.

As you all know, I’m a pretty frugal gal. But sometimes, even the most thrifty shopper, including myself, needs to splurge. Especially when the happiness of one’s hair is at stake. Hop on over to Beauty Bets today to read up on one of my worth-every-penny wise investments, Moroccan Oil. Honestly, it’s an essential product any woman who uses heat style-rs needs in their get-pretty arsenal.

Wanna learn how to snag deeply discounted beauty services at some of my Twin City favorite salons and spas? I’m talking 50 percent off waxing, Brazilian blow-outs, hair cuts, highlights, dye jobs, manis, massages…you name it! Are you all nodding your heads yes, yes, yes!

Well, hop on over to Beauty Bets today to read about Yelp’s  “Hot on Yelp” promotion, happening next week, November 1-7. Trust me, these deals are too, too, good to pass up. (For readers outside of Minnesota, the promo is being offered around the country.) Next week, I’m looking forward to a 75-minute massage here & a Brazilian here. All right, so I’m not really looking forward to the wax, but I am happy to not be paying full price for it! Click here to get all the deets!

three doable diys, no. 2

Hi hi hi!

I don’t know about you all, but I get discouraged by DIY projects with lengthy lists of materials and long, detailed directions. Projects that have an unfussy list of materials and don’t require a mammoth investment of time? Yeah, those are way more up my alley. Even better if they can be made from stuff found, where else? At the thrift store.

Here are three I’ve liked lately that fit the bill…

Even though I kind of dislike hate the game itself (two words: childhood overload!), I think these Scrabble-tile push pins are too cute. All you need are some thrifted Scrabble tiles, push pins and a hot glue gun.

Jill from Lune Vintage comes up with the best DIYs. Take this ’70s-inspired slasher scarf, for example. Materials needed? A thrifted T (make sure it’s 5-10% lycra or spandex) and a sharp pair of scissors.

When it came to the over-sized pompoms donned by the models in Sonia Rykiel’s fall 2011 show, it was love, love, love at first sight. In fact, I saved this pic in my inspiration files way back in March!

So, imagine my delight, when nearly eight months later, I found this cute Dutch blogger, making her own mighty pom headbands at home! Wouldn’t one of these in cream, black or red be the perfect whimsical addition to a holiday party get-up? Yeah, I think so too.

Quick and simple DIYs. Do you dig?

I hope y’all have had lovely Mondays!

every girl needs: hot rollers

Y’all already know all about how much I love being a girl and doing lady-like stuff, like painting my nails, hand-writing thank you notes and rolling my hair.

I got hooked on hot rollers in a major way when I lived with Jess, who is a grand-master at the art of it. On especially lucky occasions, she’d even roll it for me, while I sat and we gabbed. It was the equivalent, in terms of relaxation, to a couple glasses of wine or an hour-long sweaty yoga class after a long day at work. Really awesome.

So, when I spotted these beauties from Bourbon & Lace at the Mighty Swell sale, I knew I HAD to have them before I even opened the box. Luckily, Rae wanted a dress of mine that was close in price, so we swapped and I got to bring these pretty things home with me.

Let’s take a quick sec to talk about how awesome these are. The box? It’s original. The rollers inside appear to have never been used. Plus, every one is topped with a little flower! The icing on the cake? They come travel-ready, in a plastic, handled carrying case. Radness. Am I the only one who geeks out over shit like this?? In looooove.

Another super cool thing…they turn off when the lid is closed & on when it’s open. Hot and ready to roll!

All done!

Helpful hints for happy rolling:

♥ Chill out. Take your time.

♥ Don’t be a dummy—use a heat protectant spray beforehand. Consider this as optional as applying sunscreen before an afternoon at the beach. As in, it’s not optional! Your hair will be much happier & healthier if you do this. This drugstore spray is what I use, and it’s less than $6.

♥ Use a claw-clip to divide your hair into several sections, and roll one at a time. I clip all my hair up, and roll the bottom hair first, moving my way up, one small part at a time. Brush it smooth before rolling, or your curls will be fuzzy and frizzy.

♥ Random: Jess swears that once you’re done, popping outside (especially if it’s cold out), helps set the curl. My trick for long-lasting curls is more basic: I try to leave the rollers in as long as I can, and then I set with my favorite hair spray.

♥ Your curls will be super tight and wacky at first. Don’t panic! I usually pull my hair back for a bit or tousle it up, and in a half-hour or so, it’s lost that pageant-y tight bounce. It will relax into sweet waves in a bit. Be patient!

Anyway, I’m so stoked about this find, and had to share! Be back soon with a long-overdue store review!

Meghan

i got my hair did today…

And asked to have it look just like hers.

Of course I didn’t get cut that short, but my girl Liz rocked out bangs just like hers, and I’m a happy girl. And since I’m too tired to blog much else, I figured I’d share with you some pictures of this gorgeous rock and roll style icon.

Nighty night!

guest blogging at beauty bets

Hiya!

This Wednesday is going to be beautiful. Wanna know why?

For one, it’s the middle of the work-week. Just a couple more days, and then another blissful weekend will be here. And as you all know, I love my weekends.

For two, it’s the day my weekly beauty column runs over at Beauty Bets. This week, I shared an off-the-menu salon technique that extends the life of summery highlights, and keeps dollars in your pocket. I even show off my greasy roots in the before photo. The things I do for you dear readers, I tell ya! Check out the post here.

For three, I’m finally getting a new garage door! This might not sound like a huge deal, but believe me, it IS. I’ve been without a working garage door for ages, and finally have enough saved to replace it. Yessss!

And last, but not least, Wednesdays = nacho night. Icing on the cake.

Hope your days are fantastic!

every girl needs: a treasure chest

I love being a woman. I like wearing high heels and having armpits that smell nice. I appreciate having doors held open for me, and am grateful when burps (and farts) are kept to a minimum when I’m around. I don’t consider myself high-maintenance per se, just a lady’s lady. And being one of those can sometimes requires a little upkeep.

Last week, I had a stretch of “gross days.” You know, the ones when you feel greasy, zitty, flabby, how-could-anyone-think-I’m-attractive-? and blah. And you know what? As bad as that (fleeting) feeling was, I was happy to have an arsenal of girlie stuff that I knew was guaranteed to help me feel better.  A nice long bath, an at-home mani, a heels-on night out with my man (who always makes me feel like a million bucks), a big night of beauty rest—every girl needs a handful of simple, inexpensive methods for getting their pretty back, and those are some of mine.

Another thing every lady should have? A treasure chest. Because ladies, of course, have a lot of jewelry. I’m lucky enough to have a treasure table. This pretty piece was made by my great-grandpa as a gift for my grandma Mary when she was a little girl (sometime in the early ’20s).

From the outside, it looks like a plain table. (And yes, those are my bedroom walls. And yes, they are pink. Le duh.)

But open it up, and behold pretties galore.

Most of the little compartments have the original lids, too. Cool right?  My dad had felt liners made, one with my initials, MJM.
So sweet.

So, where do you keep your girlie treasures? A vintage bowl maybe? A jewelry box, necklace tree, train case or  serving dish?

If you’re looking for ideas, here are some of my favorites from around the Internets.

This hidden jewelry box diy from design*sponge has been on my to-do list for months. So cool!

This little bunny ring dish from Anthropologie is too cute! I get excited when I see anything less than a gazillion dollars there, too (this lil plate is $10).

I stole this idea from this stand I saw at Urban Outfitters. I like displaying everyday objects, like a collection of pretty rings, in a special way. A little cloche like this over a patterned saucer would be adorable!

This multi-layered mod plastic jewelry box is sweet.

And in the end, can’t go wrong with a classic, velvet-on-the-inside, pink-on-the-outside,  jewelry box. This 1950s pretty is on sale, too, for $24. Sweet.

I hope you all have had fantastic Mondays! I’m off for my nightly dose of four of my favorite ladies…. “Golden Girls.”

Nighty night…xo.
