comfy summer uniform

Busy weeks like this one have me craving comfort. Spaghetti and meatballs for dinner eaten in jeans and a T-shirt with a shoulder rub from my honey for dessert kind of comfort. Except here’s the thing…I don’t actually own a pair of jeans. In the great pre-rummage sale purge, I tossed all my hole-y ones, which left me with, well, none. Good thing I have plenty of skirts and tees, a combo just as amenable to pasta dinners and back rubs, thank goodness. Want to see some comfy casual looks I’ve been eying up for inspiration lately? Behold…

Katy, from Kansas Couture, nails it here in this badass eagle tee, lace-less loafers and some nice accessories. I don’t know how this band she’s repping sounds, but I’m pretty sure I’d be a fan just so I could scoop up their tee. Snaps for Katy for thrifting nearly everything pictured, too!

Mandi, from Here’s Looking at me Kid fame, also has this whole look down pat. I’d really love to own one of these “Midwest is Best” tees from Megan Lee Designs someday. One more cute-related side note: I’ve got to pick up some ankle socks ASAP (or just find the ones I purchase last spring and immediately lost).

Outfits like Amanda’s make me feel like a pansy for my day-to-day color choices. I adore her banana yellow bag with that ’80s-ish dotted top, and how the chambray skirt tones everything down.

Last but not least, if you’ve got the bod to pull off a crop top and body-con skirt, feel free to do it like this Polish cutie does. I’m such a fan of white tennies paired with short skirts.

Now that you know about my comfy summer uniform, why don’t you tell me about yours?

Ready for your weekly dose of things interesting things on the Internets? Off we go…

Like the pic above? It’s from my tumblr crush of the week, That Kind of Woman.

“Mirror cleansing.” I like this idea (and this entire post) a whole heck of a lot.

The Ghost Adventurers visited Loretta Lynn’s ranch and I missed it. Poop.

These Tennessee sunset pics are making me all nostalgic for vacation.

Silly me. Why haven’t I been following Time Enough for Drums until now?

Got to try this ombre mani how-to ASAP.

These yummy micheladas would go perfectly with nachos. So would these frozen peach margs. Yum, yum, yum.

I hope y’all have had beauteous days so far. After work I’m heading up to St. Cloud to visit with my man’s fam. If I’m lucky, we’ll squeeze in a stop at Savers, too! Wheeeee!

a few fargo finds

I’m back! After a marathon day of driving and thrifting, thrifting and driving, I got home from Fargo stinky, hungry and too tired to even unload the car. It was worth it though! I went to a lot of sweet new-to-me shops and loved the drive itself—it really was the perfect day for it. Anyway, here are a few things I found….

Other scores not pictured: an over-sized woven beach bag, a super cute ’50s sweater with little Yorkies embroidered onto it, a fringe-y suede vest, lots of dresses, some cool paint-by-numbers, some cute skirts and blouses, a few nice Pyrex casseroles, two sassy pin-up girl crop tops, a lamp for the shop’s dressing room….I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff. Anyway, I’ve got to hustle on getting some of the clothes prepped in time for the Mighty Swell sneak peek photo shoot scheduled for Thursday! We have super pretty models lined up and our favorite photographer is shooting them—it should be a really fun night!

Did you get out and thrift or rummage sale this weekend? Find anything awesome?

I hope you all have beautiful days!

This weekend, I’m excited to f-i-n-a-l-l-y head up to Fargo for a mini thrifting adventure. Going to new thrift stores makes me downright giddy, which I know is probably not normal at all. But really, spending the weekend hunting for awesome stuff that lies just a day away—how can that not be a fun time? I’ve saved up some dollars for gas and goodies too, which means I don’t feel badly about stopping a lot on the way there and back. St. Cloud, Alexandria, Fergus Falls, wherever else is on the way, I’m a comin’ for ya!

:::Sigh:::

I wish I could leave right this instant BUT…this girl’s got bills to pay (lots of ’em) and a to-do list at work that’s freakishly long, so it’s off to the office I go. I hope you all have wonderful Fridays!

how to: DIY frame collage wall

Rae and I are up to our elbows in all kinds of crafty goodness this week, making pretty stuff for Mighty Swell’s storefront windows. Gathering ideas and inspiration for our displays and then seeing them to fruition (while sticking to a bare bones budget!) is one of our favorite things about owning our own shop. So, I figured I’d start sharing some of our favorite projects and DIYs with y’all here on the blog! Sound good? Cool. Without further ado, here’s Rae on how to make a collage wall with thrifted frames and wrapping paper.

This DIY project served as the background for Mighty Swell’s spring sneak peeks as well as pretty décor behind our checkout table. We got so many compliments and inquiries about them (and even a few offers to buy them off the walls), Meghan asked me to write up a little how-to. I’ve been collecting vintage wrapping papers since who knows when… YEARS. I’ve wrapped many a gift in them, but I still have a lot leftover. This project was the perfect way to use up some remnants and display some of my favorites patterns. Like most of the DIYs we undertake at the store, this project is multi-purpose, affordable, easy to accomplish in a short amount of time and when it’s all said and done, super cute!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Miscellaneous frames in different sizes. I like to gather as many different shapes, styles and textures of frames as I can. These were all thrifted for 50 cents to $3.00! Think about where your finished pieces will live after you’re done so you can choose frame sizes accordingly.

Spray paint in your favorite color. Ours just happens to be YELLOW!

A variety of vintage wrapping papers. (Vintage fabric would be cute too!)

Hanging hardware, glazier points, needle nose pliers, hammer and nails.

Spare cardboard (optional)

HOW TO MAKE

1. Prep your frames. Carefully remove all artwork, glass and paper backing, leaving just the naked frames. Hold onto glass, cardboard, mat boards and backing boards as you will use these in the assembly proccess. You may find it necessary to remove nails, staples and other things that are holding the glass in the frames…This is where the pliers comes into play.

2. Spray paint! Make sure to do this outside of possible or in a well-ventilated area. Lay down plenty of old newspaper or a drop cloth. Give your can of paint a good shaking, and be sure to get sides and inside of frames while you’re spraying. Pro tip: It’s always tempting to spray on one thick coat and call it a day—resist this urge! Several lighter coats of spray paint will yield a MUCH better final product with fewer unsightly drips and uneven patches. Let the paint dry completely before moving onto step three.

3. When your frames are totally dry, start playing with the layout and configuration of your frames. This will help you decide which paper goes into which frame and will result in a perfect collage wall. When you find a layout you like, snap a pic so you can remember what goes where before you start hammering nails into the wall.

4. Assemble! This is where those materials you saved in step one will come in handy. To cut your wrapping paper  down to size, trace the backing board that came out of the frames. This will ensure a perfect fit! If there is no backing board, you can trace the glass (very carefully) onto a piece of cardboard and use that. When you have your paper cut, use a glue stick or spray adhesive to mount the paper to the backing boards. This step is crucial in preventing bubbles and other unsightly blemishes in your artwork. Finally, place your new wrapping paper covered boards into the frames and secure. If you removed the securing parts of the frame, you can use glazier points to hold them in. Refer to your pic of the layout you liked and start hanging!

Ta-da! You’re done! Now you have a lovely wall collage to call your own!!

I’ve been listening to the sweet sounds of The Supremes tonight on repeat, so it seemed appropriate to share this pic of Doris Day and Diana Ross circa 1967. What a cute pair! I hope you’ve been enjoying some good tunes this Wednesday as well. C’mon back tomorrow for how-to Thursday. Got a sweet little DIY lined up I think you’re going to LOVE.

Happy Tuesday dears! Here are a few things I’ve been loving on this week…

Seeing my dear friend Jessica’s beautifully curated loft space on Design*Sponge yesterday. I practically jumped out of my chair with excitement—I’m so happy and proud of her!

Finding out that my favorite vintage store in Minneapolis (um, besides my own), started a Tumblr this week. Give ’em a follow! (I heard they’re giving away something awesome once they get to 50 followers!)

Making giant bowls of salads and living off them for days. I made this one last night and it is yummy.

Giggling at these artsy pothole photos.

Being moved by this brave blogger and her ambitious new project.

Ignoring my to do list to pour over vintage Vogue editorials on Youthquakers. Such an awesome time suck (and way more fun than mopping my floors)!

Loving the latest  podcast from Girl Germs Radio featuring the lovely C.L.A.P. gals. Lots of great DIY advice, as well as the usual awesome tunes.

my favorite find of the weekend

Hi dears!

I went to an amazing estate sale Friday afternoon out in the country. The contents of an entire old farmhouse were for sale, and I had so much fun wandering around the grounds, barns and massive house, picking out treasures to take home. My favorite find of the day is definitely this rolling dumb waiter I got for $1.

I’ve been looking for a small bar table to for my dining room for ages and this baby fits perfectly. Plus, it has wheels! When I got it home, I gave it quick bleach-water bath outside (and discovered two daddy long legs!) before bringing it inside and polishing it top-to-bottom with Old English. I topped it with my favorite bottles and thrifted bar utensils (including these babies) and voila—this girl is ready to host a party! I still can’t get over that it was just $1. That’s $2 less than the cheapest beer at my favorite bar!

Did you go to any estate or rummage sales this weekend? Find anything fun?

happy dad’s day!

Happy Father’s Day, lovelies!

I’m so happy to be spending this morning with my dad (and big brother) up north at the cabin, where this photo was snapped back in 1984. It’s one of my favorite places on earth.

Tonight,  I’m hanging out with another daddy-o in my life, my boyfriend. He won’t be able to spend today with his beautiful daughter, which is a bummer. My plans for taking his mind off missing her include treating him to Jucy Lucys and then going to a show.

Whatever’s on your agenda, I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday, honoring the dad(s) in your life!
