recently found: vintage trash movie postcards @ eagles #34

If you haven’t been to the Eagles #34 in South, you’re missing out. On Saturday night, my sweetheart & I went there to see a group of bands his boss had booked, and I have to say, the whole evening was more fun than I’d bargained for. We arrived at a bit after 8, and found three separate rooms jumping with music (Cajun, ’50s, surf, bluegrass, rock ‘n roll, country…), a bake sale, a raffle (win a laptop, $100 cash, framed duck print, Cabela’s gift card…) and a $7 meatloaf dinner I would have been all about had I not just stuffed myself at Little T’s not even an hour before.

Across from the bake sale (Christmas cookies, banana bread, chocolate bark…) were a couple tables packed with rummage-y stuff (potpourri pinecones, crocheted reindeer, baseball cards, kitty calendars…). I spotted these oversized postcards featuring trash movies from the ’40s and ’50s behind some used books. I have a wee bit of an obsessive collection of vintage postcards, and figured these would make good additions. Some of the movie titles cracked me up.

I think I spent $10 for a bunch of them, and all the moola went to the University of Iowa Diabetes Research Center. The rest of the night was spent sipping Screamin’ Eagles (which sounds like the name of a high school football team mascot, but really is a deliciously creamy hot toddy, the likes of which I’ve not had outside of that specific hole-in-the-wall) and listening to great music with my honey. It was a great time, all around. Which was, in my book, excuse enough to get out the Instax.

I hope you had fun weekends, too. I’m off to (hopefully) have an ultra-ultra productive night pricing, steaming & mending clothes for the weekend. Wish me luck! I needs it!

style magic: bobbie gentry

Hi lovelies!

Time for another Style Magic feature, this one featuring one of my most favorite country ladies, Bobbie Gentry. Not only is this enchanting beauty a ridiculously gifted songwriter/singer, but she has a style all her own. I love how she can rock a va-va-voom showgirl-style frock (complete with a waist-high slit) in one pic and then be perched barefoot in a tree, looking ever-so-comfy in jeans and a pull-over in the next. And that hair! The ever-present voluminous mass of long, long, long brunette locks—I just love it. (I even gush about it on Beauty Bets tomorrow! Go see!)

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8

Of course, I couldn’t have a whole feature about Bobbie without sharing a few of my favorite clips of her singing.

“Ode to Billie Joe”

“Fancy”

I hope you enjoyed this little round-up of pretty pictures. To learn more about Miss Gentry, get your mitts on the winter issue of Venus Zine, which features a *fascinating* article about her by Tara Murtha.

what i’m up to tonight

Here’s a hint…

I’m taking a piano class! Every winter, I try to do at least one thing through Community Ed. Last year, I swam laps every week in an extremely overly chlorinated pool in Northeast. Tonight,  Intro to Blues Piano Using Chords and Playing by Ear. I’m stoked!! Here’s hoping my rusty fingers are up to the challenge. They said beginners welcome…

remember duane allman

source

Today, October 29th, marks the 39th anniversary of Duane Allman’s death. He died at the age of 24 in a motorcycle accident. Duane is, hands down, my favorite guitar player, and even though his life was cut short, he left us a lot of imperishable music. I’m going to jam the shit of his must-have anthology today, and of course, some Derek & Dominos.

you, Duane.
You are greatly missed.

blogroll love: kissssing

Hello.

My name is Meghan, and I just fell in love with a blog called kissssing. Truth: I’m a sucker for anything romantic. Including, of course, making out. Which is why this mushy blog gets special attention whenever it pops up in my reader.

kissssing

On it, you won’t find dating tips or advice for making your marriage better. Just sweet, sentimental photos of people getting all lovey-dovey, with a love-related quote or lyric inserted here and there.
In a word: perfection.

Jim Folsom, Governor of Alabama 1947-1951

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

My Baptist grandma didn’t lie: Dancing leads to kissing.

Linda & Paul McCartney

Making out while afloat in inner-tubes, beer in hand?
This couple rules!

And, since we’re talking romance, check out this to-do list handwritten by Johnny Cash. Judging by item no. 2, it seems that Johnny, too, recognized the importance smoochin’ has in a long-lasting love affair.

P.S. This gem is up for auction on December 3 & 4, along with a whole slew of Johnny’s personal items. Wouldn’t this, framed up, make for the most romantic present EVER? I would m-e-l-t with happiness if I found this under my Christmas tree. Sigh…a girl can dream, right?

P.S. Thanks to When You Awake for the heads up on the Cash estate sale.

i got my hair did today…

And asked to have it look just like hers.

Of course I didn’t get cut that short, but my girl Liz rocked out bangs just like hers, and I’m a happy girl. And since I’m too tired to blog much else, I figured I’d share with you some pictures of this gorgeous rock and roll style icon.

Photos from here & here.

Nighty night!

chicago trip picture dump

Oh boy, Chicago was a total ball. I took a gillion photos of the things I loved. Including…

Our visit to Chess Records. This is the room where Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Memphis Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, The Rolling Stones and countless other blues and rock ‘n’ roll greats recorded.

And here’s a wall filled with casts of faces of blues legends.

Walking around Millennium Park & taking the obligatory photo of ourselves in the bean.

Enjoying the gorgeous views from our hotel room.

Seeing Iggy & the Stooges!!!!!!!

And after that, going to the Green Mill for jazz.

Taking late-night train rides.

And last but not  definitely not least, spending time with the handsomest man on the planet.

It was such a fun trip, and I can’t wait to have another little adventure with my sweetheart.

Be back soon…

Pitchfork, smitchfork. Send me back in time to 1974 and Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic, please!

Ok, so I know that’s not possible, but tonight, I get to pretend I’m there, at least for a couple of hours. You see, I’m going to see Yabo Yablonski’s documentary, simply named “Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic,” and I’m so excited.

Filmed at the Texas World Speedway in College Station, the movie showcases performances and (more interestingly?) the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of the best outlaw country superstars, including Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and of course, the man throwing the party, Willie Nelson. Other notable performers at the ’74 festival include Leon Russell, Ricky Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Doug Kershaw, B.W. Stephenson, Jerry Jeff Walker and Michael Murphy. Some reviews mention Ricky Nelson, performing. If he’s in this movie, it’s truly just icing on the cake.

Here’s a shot of Willie, kicking off the event, which was sponsored by Lone Star beer. A crowd of more than 150,000 was expected to attend the three-day festival.

“I wanted to have it on the Fourth of July, because it was too hot to fight,” Nelson said, when speaking about why he decided to plan the event during the height of Texas’ steamy summer. “The hippies and the cowboys can get together, and everybody can get along, and that’s exactly what happened.”

And while you can’t Netflix this puppy, you can find a good amount of clips from the film on YouTube. (Due to some fresh-air loving ladies with their boobies in the wind, this clip is NSFW.)

I feel really lucky to be able to see it on a big screen, not to mention with two of my favorite fellow old country lovers. If you’re in the Twin Cities area, tickets are still available here.

P.S. The photo of Willie is from The Selvedge Yard.
