recently thrifted

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? I have a short little list I’m working on. In addition to the usual (drink more water, etc.), I have a couple thrifting-related goals. Towards the end of last year, I was alarmed at how thrifting, something I enjoyed so much, started to feel like work, now that it actually is, well, my work. I missed the old, pre-reselling days when I simply shopped at thrifts for fun—no pressure, no competitive feelings—just a girl in search of a good old-fashioned bargain or vintage gem. So, my no. 1 resolution, thrifting-wise, is to recapture the joy of the hunt.

With the intention of getting back to that happy place in 2012, I’ve changed both my mindset and a few of my shopping habits. Visiting estate sales on Sundays is one such tweak. I have one firm (FIRM!) day off a week—Sunday—that I spend however I want. And sometimes all I want to do is visit an estate sale! So last Sunday morning, I did. Over the course of the weekend, I could see that the sale had been ravaged—the rooms were all nearly bare, the carpet littered with leaves and debris. With my old mindset, I might have been disappointed by how empty it was, sad over all the finds I missed. But somehow, knowing that I had chosen to be there on my day of leisure set my mind right. I contentedly made my way around each room, digging through boxes, opening drawers, eyes open. It felt like the old days, like progress was being made. And of course, I found some things I’m excited about.

This class photo, featuring the home’s owner (the teacher, pictured in the top left corner), was tossed on a bed with towels and linens. Easily overlooked by others; a gem to me.

I have a horrible habit of leaving a trail of jewelry around my house. In nearly every room sits a bangle, a pair of earrings, a brooch, a necklace or some combination thereof. Meaning, I never pass up the opportunity to pick up a pretty vintage catch-all or box. This one, adorned with cute little forget-me-nots, now sits atop my commode.

A couple vintage hymnals to add to my collection. The one on the right bears an inscription from 1913!

It’s likely that this stunning crewel pillow will end up at shop, not because I don’t love it, but because it doesn’t go with my living room’s color scheme. It has the most gorgeous detail!

I was so happy to find this vintage Salton bun warmer for mama Kate. She complimented mine at a soup swap I hosted last fall, and I’ve been on the hunt for her ever since. P.S. If you ever find one of these at the thrifts, buy it! They’re wonderful, especially in the winter.

 Other things I came home with, not pictured: some vintage stationery and postcards, a cool tiny hand-carved cactus knick-knack & a couple more pieces of sheet music. My grand total was $5, but enjoying the fun of the search…well that was simply priceless.

heads up: second debut’s fur sale

{source}

Just as winter’s icy chill starts to set, Goodwill offshoot Second Début is busting out their impressive collection of fur for a special sales event. According to general manager Kathy Cahlander, the 50+ pieces range in era from the ’50s to the ’90s, and every single one has been inspected and vetted by an expert from Rebnick’s Furs. “The quality control is excellent,” Cahlander promises. “Every piece is pretty fabulous.” Highlighted items include vintage shearling jackets, full-length furs, mink wraps, mink-trimmed swing coats, fur headbands and fox-fur cropped jackets. Prices range from $20 all the way on up to $400. Cahlander advises that shoppers get to the store early, as folks “come from all over” to shop this sale. You can find store hours and location info here.

Happy shopping!

what goes around comes around: mix & match nails

(source)

 I can’t help but roll my eyes a tiny bit when I witness arguments about who started what fashion or beauty trend when or who did it first. If you love, study and shop for vintage like I do, you already know the secret: Nothing’s really ever “new.” In the spirit of celebrating the resurrection and reinterpretation of vintage trends, I thought I’d start calling out examples when I see ’em. Sounds fun right?

I thought I’d start with a beauty trend I love, the mix and match mani. The gorgeous “stained glass” nails pictured above were photographed by Saul Leiter for the November, 1960 edition of Bazaar. Now, 50 years later, you can barely scroll through a beauty blog without seeing a reference to ombre or mix & match manis. (Ex. one, two & three.)

I guess JT was right.

I’m off to primp for a very overdue lady date with this sassy lass. I can’t wait!

etsy find: the prettiest of slips

Can we take a break from our regularly scheduled Tuesday night activities to pause and appreciate how beautiful these repurposed vintage slips from Whimsy Time are?

:::pause:::

You’ll want to click the pics to jump to the listings if you’re at all like me and want to buy them all immediately. OK, I guess we can all go back to whatever we were doing. Which in my case, is making potato tacos and listening to reggae records.

sunday funday

Yesterday I spent the afternoon shooting some pics for a new Mighty Swell vendor, It’s For Nice. Brothers Jason (boyfriend of my lady friend Andrea) and Pat are estate sale geniuses, and the collection of menswear they’ve amassed is really unparalleled. They have so many gems! It was a beautiful afternoon to be out in their sun room, listening to records, taking photos and sipping on Jason’s homemade piña coladas. Sneak peeks from It’s For Nice, and from all our wonderful vendors, will be going up on Facebook soon, but in the meantime…here are a coupla outtakes.

The It’s For Nice boys are bringing their goodies to Etsy soon, btw. Add ’em to your circle!

vintage paper packs

Over the weekend, my friend Andrea and I assembled a bunch of vintage paper packs to sell at Mighty Swell over the holiday season. Each one is one-of-a-kind, but all contain a sweet mix of stationery, postcards, book pages, game pieces and other miscellaneous ephemera I’ve been squirreling away over the years. They’ll make great gifts for any vintage-loving scrapbook-er, art journa-ler, collage artist or stationery nerd. I unearthed some gems while we assembling them. How precious are these little critter cards?

Anywho, that’s just a peek. I’ll be selling them the shop over the holidays for anywhere from $4-7, depending on the size and contents. Gotta love affordable gifts, vintage ones especially!

cure for the DIY doldrums

{Image above c/o Cathy of California.}

Does anyone else get discouraged when looking for new DIY projects online? I consider myself a pretty good at the Google and even still my searches are fruitless, turning up posts by glue-gun crazed moms and little else. Even my consultations with the few vintage craft books I own has left me wanting for more. It seemed like fortuitous timing then, to discover Cathy of California via Lena Corwin’s awesome blog. Simply reading through Cathy’s posts makes the ice that is my creative brain start to thaw. Her artist profiles are fascinating and incomparable to anything else I’ve read. Obviously, I had no qualms at all about ordering her book, Vintage Craft Workshopwhich includes designer how-tos for 24 vintage projects and is supplemented by artist profiles and craft history. I hope the UPS man hurries…

P.S. What are your favorite DIY blogs? I need to know.

P.P.S. I put together a back-to-school beauty supply list over on Beauty Bets today. Every product costs less than $7!

heads up: vintage shopping galore this weekend

{Junk Love founder Malia Schroeder}

Holy smokes!! There are so many fantastic thrifty/vintage shopping events happening this weekend, I thought I’d round ’em all up for ya.

Junk Love: The brain child of Malia Schroeder and her mom, Junk Love is a semi-regular flea-market-meets-craft-fair type of event that promises a wide array of reasonably priced “junk” along with upcycled and refurbished goodies. This weekend’s sale, happening today from from 2-9 p.m., tomorrow from 12-9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., is supplemented with photo prints from Babes in Thriftland‘s Erin Foster and hand-printed clothes from Tipsy Kitty Clothing. Hop on over to their website or Facebook page to learn more.

Bloomington Salvation Army Grand Opening: There’s a new Sal Val in town! Opening tomorrow, the Bloomington Family Store promises to have a large selection of designer labels, lots of new items, some vintage Star Wars collectibles, gold and silver jewelry and a pretty impressive collection of used fitness equipment, in addition to the usual clothing, house wares, furniture and home decor. Shoppers hitting the grand opening event are encouraged to bring a winter coat to donate to the nonprofit’s Coats for Kids campaign, which ends on Sunday. The store, located at 9728 Lyndale Ave. South, will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Twin Cities Vintage Clothing & Jewelry Show: I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I’ve never ventured out to a Cats Pajamas vintage sale at the State Fairgrounds, considering how much I love vintage AND the Fairgrounds. Their fall sale  is happening tonight from 5-10 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and boasts 45+ vintage vendors from around the region, including my friends at Greenwich Vintage. You can find them in the Fine Arts Building…just look for the handsome mustached gent and his massive collection of fab vintage woolens. Admission tonight is $7, tomorrow it drops to $5.

Angel’s Attic Sale: Many thanks to my friend Meg, who tipped me off to this fund-raising sale, happening in Bloomington tomorrow through Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The promo website touts, “thousands of valuable, unique items at exceptional sale prices” including “furniture from many fine estates, more than 500 collectible plates, high-end art pieces, jewelry, household items, electronics, new and gently used clothing, toys and much more.” Looking through the sneak peeks they have up nearly maybe my head explode—so much good stuff! All proceeds raised benefit the Angel Foundation, a nonprofit that provides financial support to adults with cancer and the families that depend on them. A $3 entry fee will be charged tomorrow, Saturday, only.

Findfurnish Grand Opening Weekend: And, last, but certainly not least, this weekend, mid-century modernists Findfurnish will reveal their brand-new 4,000-square-foot vintage-filled playground. I’m really excited about this opening for so many reasons. Besides being a huge fan of Findfurnish’s rad mid-century furniture finds and their collection of sweet functional smalls, I simply adore Marie’s story and have so enjoyed watching her business grow. I can’t wait to hit up the preview party tonight after work and congratulate her this huge accomplishment in person. The studio, located in the Casket Arts Building in Northeast Minneapolis, will be open to the public tomorrow from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Please do check it out!

It pains me to say that I don’t think I’ll be able to hit up any of these events, besides the Findfurnish opening. Wah-wah. I’m heading up north with my sweetheart tomorrow morning for a day full of thrifting and a night of country music, which is pretty much perfection in my book. Since we’re going to see Glen Campbell, I’ll leave you with a vid of my favorite song he does, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.”

I hope you all have wonderful weekends, my dears!

recently thrifted

Hi dears,

Yesterday I waited out a downpour to head out thrifting over my lunch hour. The rain was still coming down when I left my office. Futilely attempting to  dodge puddles in my flip flops on the way to my car, I stepped directly on what I thought was a rock…which actually turned out to be a little nail. (Nice!) Instead of turning back for the office to promptly look up “tetanus symptoms” on Web MD like most sane people probably would, I chanced it and continued on my way to Hidden Treasures Thrift Store. And boy am I glad I did. I scored majorly on clothes and found a lot of other pretties for my house. Here are a few of them.

An embroidered runner for my bedside table.

An illuminated beauty mirror from GE. An extinct, but oh-so-helpful beauty tool I plan on…spoiler alert!…giving as a gift.

A fancy frame that appeals to my equal love for hearts & flowers.

This adorable album for recording your loved ones’ birthdays and anniversaries AND storing the appropriate stationery. Fun!

I’m so smitten with the font used throughout the book. Even though I never plan on getting a tattoo, I have a slew of fonts picked out that would make for great ones, now including this one.

A cute owl for my bookshelf…or a Mighty Swell grab bag.

And last but not least, a dozen mint julep cups. As if I needed another reason to count down until Derby Day.

Not pictured: Some killer, killer blazers, a stunning ’50s red party dress I’d wear to every holiday party on my calendar until the end of time if it was my size, a set of butterfly mugs, some Pyrex, some sweet vintage stationery and a few other odds and ends. All in all, a pretty productive lunch hour.

Have you hit the thrifts lately? Did ya find anything awesome?

not only am i a (co)owner, i’m also a shopper

You probably think that as a semi-professional thrifter I’m able to resist spending oodles of money on vintage at Mighty Swell sales. That is actually 100 percent untrue. Pictured above are some of my favorite finds from the weekend…and here’s a little about each.

1. I ogled this cheery embroidered top from Pink Vintage the entire first day of the sale because it was on the mannequin by the check out. When we changed her outfit out the next day, I realized how cherry the blouse was and put it in my to-buy pile immediately. I love the bright flowers and the cropped cut. I paired it today with my favorite Dickie’s  cut-offs and flips…so summery.

2. It was love at first sight for me and this this powdery pink hair dryer from Teacup Vintage. It still works!

3. I’ve been using my mom’s vintage tooled leather handbag so much lately and it’s starting to show some wear. When I saw this incredible purse from Bourbon & Lace, I knew it would make a good stand-in for my mom’s hand-me-down. The rose pattern is so lovely and the inside is mint.

4. Rae believes that every woman needs a killer pair of red heels. I concur, and would also add that a bright red handbag is another must. This looks-new canvas clutch from Valise Vintage was a deal at just $10.

5. This faded caftan from Pink Vintage is to die for. You can’t tell from this shot, but it has these cute little ties that cinch in the back, making my little “ladies” look hot and keeps it from being too maternity-ish. I’m plan on wearing this around my house in heels, my hair in rollers, a martini in my hand.

6. My favorite white high heels have been worn down to pathetic little nubs and I’ve been unable to find suitable replacements despite my frequent thrift trips. So, when I tried on these cuties from Ramble & Pluck, I knew I had to get them. They are really comfy, like my worn-out pair, and they fit like a glove. A total steal at $14.

I also went home with a creamy yellow ’70s skirt from Patterns. I have a couple others similar to it in other colors and find myself wearing them frequently to work with a simple tank. From Top Drawer Vintage, I got pink and red beaded necklace for $2. It needs to be restrung, but it’s really cool.

If you found some special somethings at the sale, be sure to post a pic on our Facebook page! We adore seeing Mighty Swell purchases being worn, loved and styled by you. I’m off to the couch to catch up on some old “Roseanne.” The fashion in season one is so rad!
