not only am i a (co)owner, i’m also a shopper

You probably think that as a semi-professional thrifter I’m able to resist spending oodles of money on vintage at Mighty Swell sales. That is actually 100 percent untrue. Pictured above are some of my favorite finds from the weekend…and here’s a little about each.

1. I ogled this cheery embroidered top from Pink Vintage the entire first day of the sale because it was on the mannequin by the check out. When we changed her outfit out the next day, I realized how cherry the blouse was and put it in my to-buy pile immediately. I love the bright flowers and the cropped cut. I paired it today with my favorite Dickie’s  cut-offs and flips…so summery.

2. It was love at first sight for me and this this powdery pink hair dryer from Teacup Vintage. It still works!

3. I’ve been using my mom’s vintage tooled leather handbag so much lately and it’s starting to show some wear. When I saw this incredible purse from Bourbon & Lace, I knew it would make a good stand-in for my mom’s hand-me-down. The rose pattern is so lovely and the inside is mint.

4. Rae believes that every woman needs a killer pair of red heels. I concur, and would also add that a bright red handbag is another must. This looks-new canvas clutch from Valise Vintage was a deal at just $10.

5. This faded caftan from Pink Vintage is to die for. You can’t tell from this shot, but it has these cute little ties that cinch in the back, making my little “ladies” look hot and keeps it from being too maternity-ish. I’m plan on wearing this around my house in heels, my hair in rollers, a martini in my hand.

6. My favorite white high heels have been worn down to pathetic little nubs and I’ve been unable to find suitable replacements despite my frequent thrift trips. So, when I tried on these cuties from Ramble & Pluck, I knew I had to get them. They are really comfy, like my worn-out pair, and they fit like a glove. A total steal at $14.

I also went home with a creamy yellow ’70s skirt from Patterns. I have a couple others similar to it in other colors and find myself wearing them frequently to work with a simple tank. From Top Drawer Vintage, I got pink and red beaded necklace for $2. It needs to be restrung, but it’s really cool.

If you found some special somethings at the sale, be sure to post a pic on our Facebook page! We adore seeing Mighty Swell purchases being worn, loved and styled by you. I’m off to the couch to catch up on some old “Roseanne.” The fashion in season one is so rad!

mighty swell’s “Summer in the City” sale!

It’s finally here…Mighty Swell’s “Summer in the City” vintage shopping free-for-all!!! Come on by the shop tomorrow or Sunday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and enjoy great tunes from our friends at Girl Germs Radio, coffee and donuts from A Baker’s Wife and most importantly tons of cute, really affordable, on-trend vintage for your closet and home from me and a whole bunch of our fabulous vendors. (Check out sneak peeks of what you’ll find here…the shot above is just one example from one of our newest vendors, Pink Vintage!) The icing on the cake? Between 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, the lovely gals from 10,000 Licks will be on site sampling their delicious farm-fresh ice pops.

In summary: rockin’ tunes, affordable vintage, multiple varieties of sugary treats & coffee. I personally think you’re crazy if you don’t show up, but obviously I’M A LITTLE BIT BIASED!

I guess what I’m trying to say is….I hope to see all your pretty faces there!

seven days ’til dolly

A week from tonight I’ll be seeing Dolly (f*cking) Parton. With this in mind, I think I’ll be able to keep on smiling my way through this week, and its 12+ hour work days and 100+ degree temperatures. Just a few (160-some) hours to go…

 xo,

Meghan

P.S. The image is a scan from a piano book a friend of my boyfriend’s thrifted while touring through Tennessee. I love it so much.

{Dusty Springfield}

Elsie’s beehive how-to got me wondering how the hairstyle came about in the first place. Here’s an interesting piece I found about the 92-year-old responsible for the iconic look.

100+ degree temps in Minneapolis have me craving outfits like this. Summer fashion perfection indeed.

♥ This woman makes $12 million a year selling vintage on eBay…insanity!!

I can’t wait for the heat to subside so I can turn my oven on again and bake up these cute mini fruit pizzas.

Casey, from Elegant Musings, shows us how to style an adorable retro pony.

Popsicles + Prosecco = why didn’t I think of this!

Wild at Heart’s styling always hits the spot for me. Their latest shoot doesn’t disappoint!

Looking for a reason to visit New York? This Jim Henson exhibit looks pretty cool.

I really love Mondays, which is why I need this print!

This post from The Beauty Department answered quite a few of my “I’ve always wondered how to fix that!” beauty questions.

Mom blogs aren’t my thing. But I’ll be darned, I love Oh Dear Drea. It’s probably because authenticity is everything, and it doesn’t get much more real than this post.

This week’s margarita I’m d-y-i-n-g to try: fresh watermelon. Gotta love that simple ingredient list!

My at-home mani skills aren’t quite up for this look, but that doesn’t stop me from appreciating the heck out of it!

recently thrifted, green & yellow

I get on kicks when I’m out thrifting. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home and discovered half the dresses I bought have polka dots or all the skirts I picked up are super bright ’80s florals. Lately I must be drawn to green and yellow things, as evidenced by my recent purchases pictured above.

Did you get out thrifting or garage sale-ing this weekend? Did you discover anything fun?

i got the washday blues

If Moe Bandy can sing about Hank Williams writing his life, can I just put it out there that Dolly Parton sings mine? Okay, cool. The song that’s my theme for this weekend? This little gem, Washday Blues.
(Please do take a listen.)

Lyrical highlights…

Just rubbin’ and a scrubbin’ and a raisin’ ’em out

I gotta hang ’em out early i hope the sun comes out

(wash ’em out ring ’em out hang ’em on the line

Get a little tired just think about the good times) washday blues

Oh how I adore you Dolly.

Anyway, on the off chance you need me, I’ll be at home, listening to country music, doing load after load after load after load after load after load after load of laundry.

Glamour…my life is overflowing with it.

I hope you have super fun weekends cupcakes!

xo,

Meghan

P.S. Have I told you yet I’m seeing Ms. Parton herself in a little under two weeks? Yeah. You can expect to hear a lot more on that real soon…

how to: care for vintage pyrex

I love vintage Pyrex. Hardly a day in my life goes by when I don’t use a piece or two from my collection. Right at this minute, a bowl holds ripening nectarines on my kitchen counter and two covered casseroles are keeping a fruit salad and some leftovers fresh in my fridge. In the sink there’s a princess bowl from last night’s post-swimming popcorn snack. They’re adorable little workhorses, they are. Like chocolate lab puppies…what’s not to love? Through my years of thrifting Pyrex, I’ve picked up a few tricks and tips for the proper care of it…tips I’m more than happy to pass along to you!

First, some DON’Ts….

DON’T put your Pyrex pieces in the dishwasher. Just. Don’t.

DON’T clean the colored outside portion of your Pyrex with abrasives or cleansers with bleaching agents (ex. Comet, Bon Ami, some Soft Scrub versions, oven cleaner, etc.). The white insides can handle a tougher clean, but the colored parts cannot.

DON’T stack wet Pyrex. It can stick together in the most terrible fashion and pulling pieces apart can cause a piece (or worse, both!) to break. Sadness will ensue, believe you me.

Some DO’s….

DO buy a can of Bar Keeper’s Friend and a pack of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. Both are multi-tasking wonder products that are both bound to be your new BFFs in the kitchen.

DO try cleaning your Pyrex in warm, soapy water with a non-abrasive sponge before moving onto any other method.

DO use Bar Keeper’s Friend to get out stains on the inside or non-colored parts of your Pyrex. Sprinkle a bit of the powder on a wet cloth or sponge, then rub it in gently. Let the paste sit for up to a minute before rinsing off with warm water.

DO use a Magic Eraser to safely remove baked-on crud or stains from the colored parts of your Pyrex. Be gentle! Not a lot of elbow grease is necessary.

DO test (in an inconspicuous spot!) any other types of cleaners, chemicals or abrasives before going all out.

DO clean your Pyrex regularly. It’s amazing how much dust and grease and other nasties will find their way to the bottom of your bowls, casseroles, etc. Give pieces that haven’t been used in a while a little soap & water bath.

Curious about the history of Pyrex, the value of collectible vintage pieces or about what a certain pattern is calledPyrex Love has everything you need and then some!

I hope you all have wonderful days!

DIY day at beauty bets

{source}

Do y’all remember John Frieda’s beach blonde sea salt spray? I rocked that stuff out like crazy in high school! Sadly, the geniuses at JF discontinued it eons ago. (Bring it baaaaack!) Happily, I’m a make-do kinda gal and have been whipping up my own version in my kitchen for ages. It’s ridiculously easy to crank out at home and costs next to nothing. And really, why would you pay more than a few bucks for glorified salt water!? Anyway, you’ll have to hop on over to Beauty Bets today to read my whole how to. I hope you enjoy!
