from grandma ella’s recipe box: sloppy joes

Something you should know about me: I could read recipes all the live-long day. Another thing you should know about me: I absolutely love projects, especially ones that require sorting or better yet, alphabetizing. So yesterday, when my mom pulled out two huge recipe boxes full of my grandma Ella’s recipes, and asked me to categorize them all, I was pretty much in heaven.

I came across a lot of old favorites from growing up, including this one for Sloppy Joes, aka one of my most beloved comfort foods.

It makes a batch large enough to feed a small army, but it freezes like a dream. I remember eating this at Grandma’s on a homemade whole wheat bun, with raw veggies, ripple chips and dip. And now I’m hungry.

weekend road trip

{source}

Since I’ll be working Thanksgiving weekend at the shop, I’m heading home today to squeeze in a little family time. I’m looking forward to bundling up and walking along the beach, a lunch date with my momma at our favorite soda fountain (I dream of their chicken salad sammy & mocha malts), buying way too much wine and homemade frozen marinara sauce at Tenuta’s, breakfasting at this amazing little dive, digging through my mom’s recipe box for a fun giveaway Rae and I have planned for the Dec. 10th sale and of course, thrifting as much as my bank account will allow. Hitting all the stores I used frequent in my younger days brings back so many good, fun memories I seriously am so excited. Fingers crossed I’ll have tons of good finds to share with you all next week. In the meantime, have wonderful weekends!

heads up: second debut’s fur sale

{source}

Just as winter’s icy chill starts to set, Goodwill offshoot Second Début is busting out their impressive collection of fur for a special sales event. According to general manager Kathy Cahlander, the 50+ pieces range in era from the ’50s to the ’90s, and every single one has been inspected and vetted by an expert from Rebnick’s Furs. “The quality control is excellent,” Cahlander promises. “Every piece is pretty fabulous.” Highlighted items include vintage shearling jackets, full-length furs, mink wraps, mink-trimmed swing coats, fur headbands and fox-fur cropped jackets. Prices range from $20 all the way on up to $400. Cahlander advises that shoppers get to the store early, as folks “come from all over” to shop this sale. You can find store hours and location info here.

Happy shopping!

what goes around comes around: mix & match nails

(source)

 I can’t help but roll my eyes a tiny bit when I witness arguments about who started what fashion or beauty trend when or who did it first. If you love, study and shop for vintage like I do, you already know the secret: Nothing’s really ever “new.” In the spirit of celebrating the resurrection and reinterpretation of vintage trends, I thought I’d start calling out examples when I see ’em. Sounds fun right?

I thought I’d start with a beauty trend I love, the mix and match mani. The gorgeous “stained glass” nails pictured above were photographed by Saul Leiter for the November, 1960 edition of Bazaar. Now, 50 years later, you can barely scroll through a beauty blog without seeing a reference to ombre or mix & match manis. (Ex. one, two & three.)

I guess JT was right.

I’m off to primp for a very overdue lady date with this sassy lass. I can’t wait!

the beauty thrifter is in

Today over on Beauty Bets, I shared a bunch of beauty-related, gift-y DIYs I want to make this holiday season. The bows pictured above (c/o Oh So Lovely via My Girl Thursday) didn’t make it into the story, but I really love them. So, please go check out that how-to too. (Too. To. Tutu!) I figure if anything’s going to entice me to dust off the ole’ glue gun, it’s making pretty (pink) bows for my girls. For more fun budget-friendly crafty ideas like this, pop on over to Beauty Bets and read my post.

Also…I hope your Wednesdays are wonderful!

etsy find: the prettiest of slips

Can we take a break from our regularly scheduled Tuesday night activities to pause and appreciate how beautiful these repurposed vintage slips from Whimsy Time are?

:::pause:::

You’ll want to click the pics to jump to the listings if you’re at all like me and want to buy them all immediately. OK, I guess we can all go back to whatever we were doing. Which in my case, is making potato tacos and listening to reggae records.

clickin’ around, vol. 26

I nearly keeled over when I spotted this couch on Adore Vintage. That pattern! It’s so pretty!

What did I do last night? Pigged out on homemade alphabet soup after a chilly spin on my bike. This recipe is awesome.

I could literally stare at these antique cyanotype photographs of botanical specimens for hours.

So thankful to Chelsea for introducing me to The Locals, a captivating Danish street style blog.

Now that the season’s in full swing, you’ll need these estate sale-ing tips. Snaps to Kaylah for sharing such great advice.

How precious are these letterpressed Dala Horse correspondence cards by Workhorse Printmakers? I love them.

And last but not least, a friend was kind enough to send me the link to The Kitten Covers last week. Thanks for that, lady bird!

sunday funday

Yesterday I spent the afternoon shooting some pics for a new Mighty Swell vendor, It’s For Nice. Brothers Jason (boyfriend of my lady friend Andrea) and Pat are estate sale geniuses, and the collection of menswear they’ve amassed is really unparalleled. They have so many gems! It was a beautiful afternoon to be out in their sun room, listening to records, taking photos and sipping on Jason’s homemade piña coladas. Sneak peeks from It’s For Nice, and from all our wonderful vendors, will be going up on Facebook soon, but in the meantime…here are a coupla outtakes.

The It’s For Nice boys are bringing their goodies to Etsy soon, btw. Add ’em to your circle!
