making time for martha

marthareevesIt’s barely 9 a.m., but I can tell already that the work day’s going to drag. That’s because tonight, I’m going to see miss Martha Reeves! I was so bummed to miss her last time she was in town (especially after reading the review my friend Danny wrote) I hopped right on getting tickets this time ’round. I’m really hoping I get to hear these three songs!

I know it’s rude to sing along, but seriously, I might not be able to help myself!

Do you have a midweek pick-me-up planned for tonight?

new year, new projects: decking out my office

I didn’t make any new years resolutions per se, but sprucing up my office is definitely a task I want to tackle this month. I’ve never had a cubicle job before last summer and I gotta be honest, it’s been an adjustment. Sitting still in one place and tap-tap-tapping for eight to nine hours is hard, but I’m set on making it a little easier this year by filling my space with things that are me. My eyes have been peeled for goodies at the thrift, but here are a few odds ‘n ends that’ve have caught my interest around the Internet.

magnetsMagnets!
1. Plastic Canvas Alphabet 2. Bruuuuuuuuce!  3. My daily dilemma 4. Vintage 1961 Scout Convertible (my dream car!) 5. Golden Girls Faces

tablecloth of the month: january

jantableThis month’s tablecloth isn’t actually a tablecloth, but a curtain I found at the Target basement in the downtown Salvation Army store. (Sheets, curtains, tablecloths…a rectangle of fabric’s a rectangle of fabric right?) And since we’re on a big rummy/Phase 10 kick over here, I’ve taken to just leaving the cards and a notebook out in a bowl the table so they’re always handy. And the clementines…well they are just plain delicious.

I hope your January’s are off to wonderful starts so far!

hearts Ugh, how dreamy is that room pictured up above (spotted here)? I’m totally having a heart wall in my next house.

If you’ve resolved (like me!) to be less distracted by checking your phone in 2013, you might also find this seven-step article extremely helpful. I sure did.

Best thing I’ve seen all week: A photo tour of the world’s grandmas sharing their home-cooked meals via The Kitchn.

Two helpful cleaning how-tos for thrifters: Tips for cleaning white- and cream-colored leather and cleaning old flasks.

Did y’all cook a lot over the holidays? Here are a handful of recipes I pinned, made and loved: Muffin Tin Tacos, Pomegranate Margaritas, Banana Bread French Toast, Slow Cooker Scalloped Potatoes, Oatmeal-Chocolate-Banana Bites.

Speaking of the holiday, I treated myself to an Arcona enzyme facial with Savita at Spot Spa over the break, and oh my goodness, my skin hasn’t been so glowy in I don’t know how long. If your complexion is in the market for a nice little pick-me-up, I’d definitely recommend this treatment!

In other exciting beauty news, especially if you’re a for ’90s babies like me, Herbal Essences is bringing back their old bottles and scents, updating them to be sulfate- and silicone-free. Oh yeah!

how to: remove red lipstick stains from clothing

tumblr_lzuuf2GRrJ1rq17yxo1_500As someone who considers herself having pretty good luck, I sometimes find myself completely and dramatically devastated when that aforementioned luck runs out. Take last month for example, when I loaded my washing machine plumb-full of vintage dresses, beloved cream tights and my go-everywhere denim jacket, which, unbeknownst to me, had a tube of bright red lipstick tucked in the right pocket. It wasn’t until I pulled the load out of the hot dryer (!) that I noticed everything was pink and streaked, spotted and mottled with oily red splotches. Quelle horreur, n’est-ce pas? (French for holy fucking shit*.) The mere sight of my beloved pieces of vintage in a ruined state sent me into a tizzy, an emotion reinforced by article after article proclaiming red lipstick one of the most devilish stains to get out. (Something about the combination of heavy pigments and grease…)

Ever the optimist, I went to work immediately, experimenting with different methods recommended online. First I tried Spray ‘n’ Wash. Then I massaged Dawn dish soap on dress after dress. When that didn’t work, I sprayed the spots with hair spray, dabbing them desperately in between bouts with a towel. I washed everything again (and then again). But those stains? They didn’t budge. Not even a smidge. And so I gave up.

For an entire week, I mulled over my dumbness, considered ordering new cream tights and felt all-around silly to be so sad over wrecked dresses. I’d have to throw everything out, I thought. Refusing to let go of my pretties without one last attempt, I turned to my old stand-by, Oxiclean. I filled up my bath tub a third of the way with cold water, swirled in two big scoops of the magical powder and added my clothes. I pushed everything ’round for a bit, making sure it was all submerged and, with a hope and a prayer, let it stew for an entire afternoon.

By the time I checked in on things, the water was a murky reddish-brown and as I pulled the clothes out of the water, I couldn’t spot any streaks. I immediately, and, if I’m honest, gleefully, ran the soaked clothes through the wash and at the end of the cycle, found nary a trace of pink or single red splotch. My abiding love of Oxiclean was reinforced, and my feelings out luckl-essness vanished without a trace. Lessons learned? One: Check (then double-check) your pockets before loading the laundry. Two: When facing serious stains, always try Oxiclean first.

2012

Another year is about to end and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sad to see it go. 2012’s been amazing. Here are a few of my favorite moments and memories.

In January, I starting volunteering for Free Arts, saw the Bears lose to the Vikings and spent a lot of free time playing baking and playing bingo.

photo(56)

In February, Rae and I hosted a lingerie sale at Mighty Swell. It was, by far, one of my favorite events we’ve ever put on.

photo(46) In March, my friend Erica and I co-hosted a French-y dinner party at my house for a dozen of our favorite gals. (Tammy Crackers not included.) It was such a fun night and a tradition we hope to continue!

photo(48) In April, the Iron Range blew my mind with its beauty. Mighty Swell hosted a kick-off party for the Summer of Dresses gals and we also popped up at The Hive Salon (which was super fun).

photo(49)

In May, I saw Ronnie Spector at the Girls Got Rhythm Fest and my best broads and I paid a visit to Kansas City. We had a fabulous time thrifting, eating (barbecue), sitting by the pool and hitting the local honky tonks.

photo(44)

In June, the prettiest girl in the world moved in with me and together with my hon’s family, we road-tripped to Texas to celebrate his grandparents’ 65th wedding anniversary. I ate a lot of Whataburger, spent a dreamy day at the beach and found with my dream (trailer) house.

photo(52)

In July, Rae got hitched (prettiest wedding of all time), I saw a bunch of amazing shows and accidentally met this guy.

photo(45) In August, I left my old job for a better one and started blogging again.

highplainsthrifter_bettycrocker

In September, we made our annual trek to the State Fair, took in a Willie Nelson show down in Mankato and kept on finding new ways to make nachos.

photo(53)

In October, my honey and I went to our favorite country music venue to see Moe Bandy and later in the month trekked to Fargo for a record show (and some thrifting).

photo (18)

In November, I saw George Jones, Bruce Springsteen and Loretta Lynn within a period of eight days (!!!) and I turned 30, a milestone I celebrated with, what else? Cookies.

photo(54)

And last but not least, December. It was definitely a busy month at work, but it ended on a lovely note with a full week-plus off.

All in all, it’s been a pretty good year! I sure can’t wait to see what 2013 brings! I hope you all have wonderfully relaxing New Year’s days.

store review: it takes a village recycled goods store

ittakesavillage   Although I pass by It Takes A Village on an almost daily basis, it took me a full year-and-a-half to start frequenting it with any kind of regularity. At first I thought it was one of those fly-by-night pop-up garage sales you sometimes see in this part of town, and, after talking to the owner, I was half right. The shop did essentially start as an indoor rummage sale, but over time, it’s morphed into a full-fledged secondhand shop with a special emphasis on high-quality vintage furniture.

WHAT’S GOOD

Lamps: If I was looking for some really sweet statement lamps—think amber-colored pendants, matching sets of ceramic table lamps, chandeliers— I would come hunting here. Tip: Ask to try out any secondhand lamp before buying it to make sure it works. A good store should be willing and able to accommodate you!

Furniture: Every time I’ve visited this shop, I’ve been impressed with the furniture selection. From gorgeous floral sofas to 1930/1940s-era highboys (with original mirrors!) to ’50s formica dining sets, the selection is always solid. I’ve also spotted some really spectacular accent chairs, side tables, coffee tables and bedroom sets!

Price-wise, there are bargains to be had. The sofas I’ve liked have run between $50 and 80, while solid wood dressers (in fabulous condition!) are upwards of $80, which is a deal. Dining sets hover around $60 and side/coffee tables can range between $20 and $40.

WHAT’S MEH

Clothes: The selection of clothing is small and underwhelming, so much so that I wish they’d devote the floor space to stocking more furniture.

Records: While they’re only $1 a piece, every single album I found I wanted was in rough shape. Definitely come here for records only if you’re looking to do something cool with the album art.

Where does the money raised here go? When I asked the store owner this question, he said that as the building owner, he subsidizes a couple GLBT non-profits that operate out of the building and that he also puts some funds, as well as donates the land, for the community garden that’s next door.
