flashback to mighty swell’s summer sale

My friend Julia shared some pics with me today that she and her hubs took at Mighty Swell’s summer sale. Going through them this afternoon, on a  dreary February (!) day, was a total pick-me-up. I love all the small details they captured! In the crazy hustle and bustle of our sales, I barely have a moment to breathe, eat or pee, much less appreciate all the pretty moments happening right in front of me. I’m grateful to have these images now, so I can remember just how special those two days were. Anyway, I hope enjoy this little glimpse back to that sunny July weekend…

Many, many thanks to Julia for sharing these with me…<3 ya girl!

heads up: mighty swell’s first-ever men’s sale!

At Mighty Swell, pleasing our amazing customers is our no. 1 priority. So when the requests for more clothes for guys kept rolling in, the idea for a menswear-only sale was born. I couldn’t be more excited about the group of vendors we’ve assembled for this sale—they’re seriously some of the best pickers in town and helping them load in over the past couple of days has been a delight. I’m also happy that our friend Danny Sigelman made us a soundtrack for the weekend. He’s selling off some of his vintage vinyl this weekend, too— about 300 or so records, all priced between 50 cents to $10, with the majority of them falling into the $2-3 range. And, lest I forget the really important stuff, we’ll also have beer sticks. Talk about icing on the cake. If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll grab your fella(s) and stop by for a spell. We’ll be open 5-9 p.m. tonight, 12-5 p.m. tomorrow.

heads up: awesome giveaway at mighty swell tomorrow

Word to the wise—we’re giving away a mix of holiday songs, hand-picked by yours truly, at Mighty Swell tomorrow. It’s a lot of fast-paced jams, from Bob Seger to James Brown, Canned Heat to Chubby Checker…no sleepy slow songs allowed! I love Christmas music in the most ridiculous way, so this project was a dream for me. Quantities are very limited, so get there on the early side to nab one. (We open at 9 a.m.) Oh, and one other sort of awesome thing? Our stupendous team of vendors brought by heaps of new vintage tonight. We promised new merch every Saturday, so that’s what we’re going to give ya. I already have my eye on a leopard fur muff from Valise Vintage and a cute mini from Patterns. Can’t wait to see y’all there!

heads up: mighty swell’s holiday kick-off is tomorrow

Rae and I spent all day decking the halls at Mighty Swell, in preparation for our sale tomorrow. Our electricity bill is going to be through the roof this next month–so. many. twinkle. lights! If you’re in town, stop by between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. tomorrow and enjoy 20 percent savings on everything in store in honor of Small Business Saturday. We’ll have coupons from our neighbors Chris and Rob’s (spend $20 and get a free Chicago dog or hamburger!) and our friends Tim and Thom, owners of the super cute boutique You and Me, who have generously offered all our customers a coupon for one free basic alteration. Both are such fabulous deals, I can’t get over it. All right, now that I’ve got my shameless plug in, I’m off to hop in the shower, nuke some Thanksgiving leftovers and head down to First Avenue to see my honey sing at The Replacements tribute show. Since he’s retired from rocking full-time, I never take for granted any chance to see him perform.

sunday funday

Yesterday I spent the afternoon shooting some pics for a new Mighty Swell vendor, It’s For Nice. Brothers Jason (boyfriend of my lady friend Andrea) and Pat are estate sale geniuses, and the collection of menswear they’ve amassed is really unparalleled. They have so many gems! It was a beautiful afternoon to be out in their sun room, listening to records, taking photos and sipping on Jason’s homemade piña coladas. Sneak peeks from It’s For Nice, and from all our wonderful vendors, will be going up on Facebook soon, but in the meantime…here are a coupla outtakes.

The It’s For Nice boys are bringing their goodies to Etsy soon, btw. Add ’em to your circle!

vintage paper packs

Over the weekend, my friend Andrea and I assembled a bunch of vintage paper packs to sell at Mighty Swell over the holiday season. Each one is one-of-a-kind, but all contain a sweet mix of stationery, postcards, book pages, game pieces and other miscellaneous ephemera I’ve been squirreling away over the years. They’ll make great gifts for any vintage-loving scrapbook-er, art journa-ler, collage artist or stationery nerd. I unearthed some gems while we assembling them. How precious are these little critter cards?

Anywho, that’s just a peek. I’ll be selling them the shop over the holidays for anywhere from $4-7, depending on the size and contents. Gotta love affordable gifts, vintage ones especially!

not only am i a (co)owner, i’m also a shopper

You probably think that as a semi-professional thrifter I’m able to resist spending oodles of money on vintage at Mighty Swell sales. That is actually 100 percent untrue. Pictured above are some of my favorite finds from the weekend…and here’s a little about each.

1. I ogled this cheery embroidered top from Pink Vintage the entire first day of the sale because it was on the mannequin by the check out. When we changed her outfit out the next day, I realized how cherry the blouse was and put it in my to-buy pile immediately. I love the bright flowers and the cropped cut. I paired it today with my favorite Dickie’s  cut-offs and flips…so summery.

2. It was love at first sight for me and this this powdery pink hair dryer from Teacup Vintage. It still works!

3. I’ve been using my mom’s vintage tooled leather handbag so much lately and it’s starting to show some wear. When I saw this incredible purse from Bourbon & Lace, I knew it would make a good stand-in for my mom’s hand-me-down. The rose pattern is so lovely and the inside is mint.

4. Rae believes that every woman needs a killer pair of red heels. I concur, and would also add that a bright red handbag is another must. This looks-new canvas clutch from Valise Vintage was a deal at just $10.

5. This faded caftan from Pink Vintage is to die for. You can’t tell from this shot, but it has these cute little ties that cinch in the back, making my little “ladies” look hot and keeps it from being too maternity-ish. I’m plan on wearing this around my house in heels, my hair in rollers, a martini in my hand.

6. My favorite white high heels have been worn down to pathetic little nubs and I’ve been unable to find suitable replacements despite my frequent thrift trips. So, when I tried on these cuties from Ramble & Pluck, I knew I had to get them. They are really comfy, like my worn-out pair, and they fit like a glove. A total steal at $14.

I also went home with a creamy yellow ’70s skirt from Patterns. I have a couple others similar to it in other colors and find myself wearing them frequently to work with a simple tank. From Top Drawer Vintage, I got pink and red beaded necklace for $2. It needs to be restrung, but it’s really cool.

If you found some special somethings at the sale, be sure to post a pic on our Facebook page! We adore seeing Mighty Swell purchases being worn, loved and styled by you. I’m off to the couch to catch up on some old “Roseanne.” The fashion in season one is so rad!

mighty swell’s “Summer in the City” sale!

It’s finally here…Mighty Swell’s “Summer in the City” vintage shopping free-for-all!!! Come on by the shop tomorrow or Sunday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and enjoy great tunes from our friends at Girl Germs Radio, coffee and donuts from A Baker’s Wife and most importantly tons of cute, really affordable, on-trend vintage for your closet and home from me and a whole bunch of our fabulous vendors. (Check out sneak peeks of what you’ll find here…the shot above is just one example from one of our newest vendors, Pink Vintage!) The icing on the cake? Between 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, the lovely gals from 10,000 Licks will be on site sampling their delicious farm-fresh ice pops.

In summary: rockin’ tunes, affordable vintage, multiple varieties of sugary treats & coffee. I personally think you’re crazy if you don’t show up, but obviously I’M A LITTLE BIT BIASED!

I guess what I’m trying to say is….I hope to see all your pretty faces there!
