Bejewelled Beanie

It was seriously so easy. Plus, all the supplies (except the needle and thread) were thrifted! The never-worn hat was found at the new Nicollet Avenue Goodwill for $1.99. The necklace turned beanie bling is from the Salvation Army Family Store, also on Nicollet, and cost $2.99. Staying glitzy (and warm) in the midst of this never-ending polar vortex? Priceless. Many, many thanks to Fran of Fall for DIY for the inspiration!

Stay warm, my dears!

midweek melodies: the sonics

tumblr_mtdtkisVkH1qckm0wo1_500

I don’t know about you, but today feels like it should be Thursday…of next week. This week has just been slogging on by! Partially to blame, I’m sure, is the amount of fun stuff I have going on this weekend, including seeing The Sonics at First Avenue.

tumblr_n16qxp0Cgu1qz5rj3o1_500

If you’re unfamiliar, The Sonics are a garage band from Tacoma, Washington, and their heydey was the early ’60s. Like all other (good) garage bands, their music is wild, hard and fast, so much so that whenever I put a record of theirs on, I can’t help but get fired up. Whether I’m running at the Y or powering through post-lunch desk slump or just in need of a mind-clearning, tush-wiggling dance party in my living room, The Sonics always hit the spot for me. Needless to say, I am pretty pumped to see them perform. I start grinning just thinking about it! In light of it being Wednesday (worst day of the week) and, of course, of Saturday’s show, today seems as good a time as any to share a mix of some of my favorite Sonics jams.

In light of it being Wednesday (aka the second-worst day of the week) and, of course, of Saturday’s show, today seems as good a time as any to share a mix of some of my favorite Sonics jams.

Warning: Listening to these songs may result in motivation.

P.S. Tickets for The Sonics are still available, so if you like what you heard or you’re simply in need of something (AWESOME) to do, get some already. It’s a freaking bargain, especially considering the opening bands are also badass!

the beauty thrifter is in!

12446175255_804dd5ebdb_bSince today’s forecast calls for yet another dumping of snow, it seems appropriate to share this round up I put together for my friends at Coupons.com featuring a handful of my all-time favorite winter skin saviors. From a facial scrub that smells like fresh grapefruit (and works miracles on blah, dry skin), to a spray-and-go lotion that keeps scaly legs at bay, each of these products will keep you looking hot (even if the temps are sub-zero outside). If you have time, please do check it out!

recently thrifted

I can’t believe how long it’s been since I shared some thrifted finds with y’all! Truthfully, I’ve been on a bit of a “look, but don’t buy” kick, as I continue to edit my belongings (and stick to my budget). That said, here are a few functional items that’ve made the cut.

The graceful lines and mid-century-like starbursts on this vase sold me. Found for $2 at the New to You Thriftique in Golden Valley.high plains thrifter // recently thrifted

I finally bought pillows for a pair of handmade lace-covered pillow cases I thrifted at Bibles for Missions oh, about three years ago. They were 25 cents a piece (the prices at that place are nuts!).Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I scored two ’30s-era Ovenex Starburst-patterned muffin tins at a neighborhood church rummage sale for 50 cents a pop. I gave ’em a workout this morning, whipping out some Cream Cheese-Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread bites for our snow-day brunch. (Both plates pictured are thrifted too.)

My boyfriend thought our old coin jar was too small, so I was “okay Mr. Moneybags!” and got this canister for him and his (never-ending supply of) spare change. Found at the Salvation Army Family Store in Burnsville for $2.99.

I bought this fruit bowl made by Royal China Jeannette at the Savers on Lake Street for $3.99. (The hand embroidered tablecloth was purchased at Treasures From the Heart in Baldwin, Wisconsin last April.) They look good together, no?

high plains thrifter // royal china jeannette I’ll never have enough vases (or things that can act as vases), which is why this circa-1975 souvenir glass from the Treasure Chest Gift & Thrift earned a spot in my cabinet…I think it was $1? P.S. I got that freesia for my Thanksgiving table!!!

Another find from the Savers on Lake Street, this covered basket/nest for our (many) remotes (it was $1.99). The verdict’s still out on whether or not the boyfriend will adopt this store-the-remotes-in-the-basket system. If it’s a fail, to the rummage-sale pile it goes!

Buck Owens, Thin Lizzy, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Loretta Lynn—who wouldn’t fall head over heels for this lineup? Please do give it a listen, my Valentine’s Day gift to you.

LOL, #leanin-themed Valentines!

Hands-down the prettiest surf boards I’ve ever seen.

I’m so excited to take in the Vivian Maier exhibit at the Minneapolis Photo Center. Have any of you been?

Kite meets camera; magical images ensue (via sho & tell).

how to: remove salt stains from boots

high plains thrifter // how to remove salt stains from boots

By the time mid-February rolls around, my relationship with winter hits a wall. From daily traffic battles on ice-slicked highways to cutting winds that spring tears to my eyes to sky-high heating bills, I’m just so over it all. Including, if not especially, my entire winter wardrobe. But since there are at least a few more weeks* of boot- (and wool-) wearing weather ahead, I must resolve to get through the tail-end of winter as stylishly as possible. First up on my to-do list? Cleaning my trusty, wear-with-everything, thrifted cowboy boots, which were, up until yesterday, marred with salty stains.

salt stain close-upIn need of some tips on how to give salt stains the slip, I turned to Google, and found posts galore on removing salt from both suede and leather boots. I mashed up advice from two posts (this one from the Free People blog and this one from 11 and Chic), and am stoked on the results. Here’s how I did it!

First up, I gathered up the necessary supplies, all of which I had on hand. (Which made me feel worse about not tackling this task last winter!)

high plains thrifter // salt stain removal suppliesI started off by giving my boots an all-over brushing, removing any gritty bits of salt and sand wedged in the stitching or soles. (The tutorials I read called for a shoe brush, but a spare nail brush I had worked just fine.)

high plains thrifter // how to remove salt stainsIn a small pitcher, I mixed a 1/4 cup of vinegar with a 1/4 cup of water. Dampening the rag with the vinegar mixture, I dabbed over all the areas stained by the salt, hitting the especially heavy stains a few times, just to make sure they were completely covered.

high plains thrifter // how to remove salt stainsWhen I finished that step, they looked like this. And when I left them to dry, I felt a little more than a little skeptical that this was going to work.

high plains thrifter // drying bootsAfter running a few errands, I came back to find dry boots. Using another clean rag, I buffed them up, using a quarter-sized dollop of leather conditioner at a time. And the results? Fabulous! Yes, my poor boots still bear a few lingering signs of water damage, but given their age and the multiple winters’ worth of abuse they’ve sustained, I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out!

Tammy Crackers is curious about where the salt stains went.
