beauty school sunday: success with at-home hair dye

7640251978_440a27fd42_zIt’s been approximately one million years since I dyed my hair at home. But with the new year around the corner and a looming list of home improvement projects on the horizon, I’ve got saving money on my brain. And so when the familiar itch to brighten up my color came around this weekend, instead of booking a salon appointment, I looked into drugstore options.

When it comes to going blonde at home, there’s no one I entrust more than Lady Clairol, so it didn’t surprise me to discover glowing reviews for Clairol’s Perfect 10, which retails for $10-12 and is available in the aisles at Walgreens, Target, CVS and Ulta stores. After doing some reading, I settled on shade Lightest Blonde, a luminescent light blonde.

Box dying your hair takes practice and to brush up on the basics, I turned, of course, to You Tube. The found the video below super helpful.

After watching the video all the way through once, reading two more how-to articles (one and two) and the instructions in the box of dye, I took the plunge. Thirty minutes later (start to finish), I had perky golden locks I’m really pleased with. And with only a $20 investment (I used two boxes since my hair’s long and thick!), a fraction of what I normally would spend on salon highlights, I had money leftover to spend at my favorite brewery. (Pay no mind to my static-y bangs and weird beer grip!)

Shifts are available from 10 to noon, noon to 2 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Bundle up (and grab a friend or two!) to do something nice for an organization that does a lot of really great deeds. Exciting news in the beauty department: Drew Barrymore is launching a cosmetics line (181 products strong!) exclusively for Wal-Mart. I am pumped.

Wholeheartedly in agreement with these five reasons to love Dolly Parton.

The branding evolution of Ms. von Teese.

Is sick the new black? Yikes, I hope not.

Three food gifts I pinned, made and loved this week: peppermint bark hearts, pineapple jam and coconut banana bread.

This lovely round-up of recipes for Christmas morning came at the perfect time. Do y’all know what your making?

And lastly, the best movie news I’ve heard all year.

Hey all, and happy hump day!

Here’s a fun challenge I’ve been working on this week: Figuring out what DIYs I can tackle during my upcoming week off of work. I’m super overdue for a few little home improvements (leaky bathroom faucet your days are numbered!) and some crafting. As per usual have lots of ideas earmarked, including these five.

holiday how-to: quick-fix praline bars

Here’s a typical story from my life: Earlier this month I celebrated my 30th birthday party with a cookie swap at my favorite bar. The party was starting in half-an-hour, and, of course, I hadn’t had time to bake a single cookie. I knew it would be OK for me to skip the swap, but I still wanted to contribute a little something sweet. Into my brain, like a saving grace, popped this recipe…a holiday favorite of my Grandma Mary. The simple ingredients and unfussy proportions make it an easy one to recall by heart, and before I knew it, I was on my way out the door, tin of cookies in hand, with a minute or two to spare.

Before I share her recipe, please know one thing: No one’s going to “ooh” and “ahh” over how these bars look. They’re not showy, they’re simple. But whatever they lack in looks, they make up for (ten-fold) in taste. I figured I’d share the recipe with you this week, in case you too find yourself in a pinch and need to whip up something for a holiday party or potluck at the last minute.

grahambars

Grandma Mary’s Praline Bars

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

24 graham crackers (roughly two packs from an average-size box)
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 t. vanilla
1 c. chopped pecans (or walnuts)

HOW TO MAKE

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Arrange graham crackers on a foil-lined jelly roll pan.

3. Heat brown sugar and butter to boiling in a saucepan. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly; remove from heat and quickly stir in the vanilla.

3. Working fast, spread the caramelized sugar on top of the crackers, as evenly as possible.

4. Sprinkle with chopped pecans.

5. Bake for 10 or so minutes, or until the caramel starts to bubble. Watch ’em carefully because they can scorch from just a minute or two of over-baking.

6. Let them cool and then break into squares or pieces.

This recipe doubles like a dream, which you might as well do because they take literally 15 minutes start-to-finish and you will want to gobble them all up as soon as they are cool.

seasons greetings

Disagree all you want, but for me, Christmas mail is the best mail. Lately after work, I’ve found myself going straight to the mailbox too see what’s arrived that day. A pretty card, a letter from family far away, cute baby photos from friends…every night it’s a little dose of happy. Speaking of happy mail, I scanned in a collection of Christmas cards from my mom and had to share them with you. Each is a treasure in its own way, from the staged sing-a-long to the oh-fer-cute garlands.

Are y’all enjoying the onslaught of holiday mail too? Better yet, did you send a holiday card this year? If so, here’s hoping it too is treasured.

heads up: donate + save deal at Savers and Unique thrift stores

uniquethriftcart

Has the holiday spirit got you feeling generous? If so, round up two bags of reusable clothing or household goods and bring ’em to any Twin Cities-area Savers or Unique thrift stores today, tomorrow or Saturday. In exchange for your donation, you’ll get a coupon for 25% off at Unique (or 30% at Savers) good on any purchase made before January 5, 2013. It’s a pretty enticing offer, especially if you’re like me and have a full bag (or four) of clothes to donate at the ready. (And don’t forget, if you get your receipt for your contribution, you can still write it off on this year’s taxes!) I’m planning on using my coupon for a last-minute emergency shopping trip…or maybe an after-Christmas spree when I want to stock up on decor, etc. for next year. If you go this weekend and get a coupon, let me know what you plan on using it for!

holiday how-to: apple-cinnamon infused jameson {updated}

final1

Happy Wednesday, y’all! I’m popping in today to share an updated version of a holiday how-to I posted a couple years ago. It’s is my third Christmas giving this whiskey out, and every year it’s received with rave reviews. I figured I’d post the recipe again along with some step shots, since the last round of photos were taken at night.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

♥ 5-6 one-liter bottles of Jameson

 3-6 cinnamon sticks

 6 Granny Smith apples

6 apples of another variety (Braeburn, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Jonagold)

A large glass or ceramic container for storing

jameo2

HOW TO MAKE

1. Pour bottles of Jameson into a container.

2. Add cinnamon sticks and sliced apples.

It’ll look like this.

jameo3

3. Cover tightly with plastic wrap.

4. Infuse for 12-18 days depending on exposure to heat/light.

Just a heads up: The apples will be a bit brown when it comes time to strain the whiskey. Don’t worry, this is normal! And, just another heads up: Do not, try like I did, to make anything out of these whiskey-soaked apples. Last year I tried cooking them down to make sauce, and let me tell you, it did not go well. Learn from me and just toss those browned up apples in the trash.

5. After infusing, strain and pour back into original bottle or into gift-able bottles or jars. I think the half-pint Ball jars are the perfect size (and so cheap!), so that’s what I usually use. I dress ’em up a bit, topping them with vintage fabric scraps and whatever yarn I have on hand.

final2This whiskey is smooth enough to drink on its own, but I’d recommend mixing a generous splash of it with apple cider in a mug. Microwave it for a couple minutes and sip it hot. It’s so stinking good!

So now that you know all about my go-to homemade gift, tell me: Do you have signature DIY you give out around the holidays? If so, I’d love to hear about it!

xoxo,

Meghan
