heads up: volunteers needed at Arc Value Village

tumblr_mfcpznfaGP1s0byero2_500Have some spare hours to volunteer this weekend? Why don’t ya sign up to help receive donations at the Richfield Arc Value Village store tomorrow, Sunday or Monday. Shifts are available from 10 to noon, noon to 2 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Bundle up (and grab a friend or two!) to do something nice for an organization that does a lot of really great deeds. They’ll have refreshments and toasty indoor break spots for warming up. Your volunteering helps the Arc take in the donations (worth $18 million dollars worth annually!) that fund programs and services that benefit people in our community with disabilities and their families.

 Email Molly, the very nice volunteer manager, or call 952.915.3652 if you can help!

heads up: donate + save deal at Savers and Unique thrift stores

uniquethriftcart

Has the holiday spirit got you feeling generous? If so, round up two bags of reusable clothing or household goods and bring ’em to any Twin Cities-area Savers or Unique thrift stores today, tomorrow or Saturday. In exchange for your donation, you’ll get a coupon for 25% off at Unique (or 30% at Savers) good on any purchase made before January 5, 2013. It’s a pretty enticing offer, especially if you’re like me and have a full bag (or four) of clothes to donate at the ready. (And don’t forget, if you get your receipt for your contribution, you can still write it off on this year’s taxes!) I’m planning on using my coupon for a last-minute emergency shopping trip…or maybe an after-Christmas spree when I want to stock up on decor, etc. for next year. If you go this weekend and get a coupon, let me know what you plan on using it for!

heads up: black friday thrift store sales

{source}

Truth be told, I’m not big into Black Friday. I love me a bargain, but I also love me some sleep…especially on a rare Friday off. And the thought of getting up at the crack of dawn to bust down the doors of some mega-chain store? Well, it just doesn’t have that much appeal. But since a fair amount of thrifts have hopped on the Black Friday bandwagon, I feel it my duty to tell you what’s the haps in case you’re out and about shopping on Friday and want to save some money.

Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores
Enjoy big, fat 50% savings on clothing all day on Friday, and special deals like half-off books, etc. announced every hour on the hour between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Hidden Treasures Thrift Store
Take 30% off both Friday and Saturday on everything in the store, including Christmas merchandise.

heads up: barbie boutique at hope chest for breast cancer stores

{source}

Barbie-lovers take note! The Hope Chest for Breast Cancer stores recently received a massive donation of 1,000+ Barbie and friends dolls from a single collector. The circa ’70s-’90s dolls, all in excellent condition and many in their original packaging, have been split evenly between St. Paul and the Orono stores and each location will be kicking off “Barbie weekend” with a ticketed party tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 a pop and can be purchased online or at the door. (Guests with advance tickets will be allowed in first; kids under 10 are free if accompanied by an adult.) All proceeds raised from ticket and doll sales goes to support under-served or financially distressed individuals and their families touched by breast cancer.
Attendees will enjoy complimentary champagne and get first crack at a collection that took a lifetime to build, and includes rarities like Escada Barbie, Rockettes Barbie, Barbie’s BFF Midge, Skipper dolls and even a Ken or two. Party-goers are encouraged to dress in their best Barbie (or Midge or Skipper or any of Barbie’s many other pals) attire. Those in costume will be entered into a drawing to win a free doll. Sounds like a pretty good time to me!

heads up: calvary lutheran’s 10th annual church rummage sale

It’s mid-October, which means it’s time for the Lutheran church down the street from me to hold their annual rummage sale. Last year, I made quick pit stop there on my way to work and scored some cute stuff, including a couple vintage dresses, a pair of beautiful gold hoop earrings, some mugs and gifties for Mighty Swell grab bags all for under $8. The surprise find was this autographed, framed photo of Stevie Nicks I got for 50 cents.

Seeing this reminds me that I still need to thrift a new frame for this baby. Anyhow, go see what’s there for yourself! Here’s what you need to know.

Calvary Lutheran Church’s Tenth Annual Rummage Sale
Address: 3901 Chicago Avenue South, Minneapolis
Hours: Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to noon everything is half-price, from noon to 3:00 p.m. it’s $1/bag and $2/box and from 3 – 4:00 p.m. everything that is left is free. Proceeds raised go towards the church’s many community programs, including Beechwood Inc., the Twin Cities Women’s Choir and Crossroads Community Organization.

Reasonably priced breakfast goodies, coffee, soup, hot dogs, BBQ and homemade desserts will also be available. If percolator coffee isn’t your thing, swing by Blue Ox Coffee Co before or after the sale. It’s just down the street and they pour one of the best cups of coffee in town.

heads up: empty the nest’s biggest sale ever

One of the questions I’m most often asked by blog readers, twitter followers and friends is “which thrift store has the best selection of furniture?” And most often, my recommendation is to hit up estate or garage sales. Except for this weekend….this weekend, my advice for those of you on the hunt for furniture, would be to head to Empty the Nest’s weekend-long blow-out, “the biggest sale we’ve ever had,” according to Co-owner Kris Youn. “We have the most inventory of any sale we’ve done…furniture is stacked on top of furniture up to the ceiling!” This over-abundance of stock has forced the Empty the Nest-ers to slash prices to crazy low levels. Like how low? $200 for high-end, mint condition leather couches, vintage steamer trunks for $50, end tables and stools for $20 or less. This sale has a special emphasis on seasonal items, too, so if you’re looking for vintage lawn furniture, wicker porch sets, planters, plant stands, lawn and garden accessories, etc, you’re in luck. The ephemera collector in me is super excited too about their collection of photos, paper, postcards and posters—all vintage. There truly is something for everyone at their events.

But don’t take my word for it…see for yourself!

Where: Empty The Nest ReHome Center, 1163 East Cliff Road, Burnsville
When: Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Do they take credit cards: Yes!
Pro tip: Get there early! And sign up for their mailing list, so you’re in the know about next month’s sale!

Happy hunting!

heads up: MLK day sales

{source}
A photo from Dr. Martin Luther King’s memorial service, 1968, on display at the Muhammad Ali Center inLouisville.

For those of you lucky enough to have tomorrow off, let me just say, I’m jealous. There are so many great opportunities for savings at the thrifts! Here’s a quick round-up for you…

Savers
Tomorrow, take 50 percent off everything (excluding new/red-tagged merchandise).  Hours of operation? 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Unique and Valu Thrifts
Enjoy 50 percent off your entire purchase at all the area Uniques (and the always-awesome Valu Thrift) tomorrow. Stores will stay open until 9 p.m.

Goodwill
Stock up on blue tagged items at your nearby Goodwill and save 50 percent. Stores will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Salvation Army Thrift Stores
Nothing fussy at good ole Sal Val, just 50% savings at all of their nine metro area locations. FYI, the Target basement downtown is packed with Christmas returns—brand-new merchandise they can’t put back on the shelves at the regular stores because its been opened. I bought my honey a brand new Food Saver Vacuum Sealing Machine (regular price $150) for $30 last time I was there. I also spied new Keurig machines, chafing dishes and crockpots, all priced to go.

ARC’s Value Village Thrift Stores
Monday marks the finale of Value Village’s weekend-long half-off everything customer appreciation blowout. It might be picked over, but then again, they might have restocked a bunch today—you’ll never know unless you go! Stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Have fun shopping!
