last girl to the pinterest party

{source}

I must confess…I really lagged when it came to hopping on the Pinterest bandwagon. I thought it was a giant time suck for the wedding obsessed, it’s true! But the last of my resistance finally wore off a few months ago when I realized how flippin’ useful the site can be. So far, the boards I refer to the most are…

beauty, hair & makeup (True story: Two weeks after joining Pinterest I was at a party, with my hair styled like this and a girl asked me if I was a hairstylist, to which I replied, “No! I just joined Pinterest!” This amazingly deep conversation ended quickly, but my night was still made!)
food & drink (True story: “Pinterest pounds” are real!)
kitchen redo (True story: I’m saving up to remodel my kitchen next summer. My theme? Pink, obviously!)
crafts, projects & plans (True story: I haven’t done a single project on this board. Ha!)

Anyway, if you’re on Pinterest, let’s be friends! I plan on starting a board this weekend exclusively devoted to nachos, and that’s reason enough right there!

scenes from sunday’s pop-up

Morning lovelies!

I really wanted to share these pics from The Hive’s anniversary party last night, but wound up falling asleep on the couch watching “The Celebrity Apprentice” at around 8:30 p.m. After working eight straight days, I was plum tuckered out! Anyway, back to Sunday…what. a. blast. The Hive’s space made for such a nice setting—even though there was a ton going on (DJ! juice bar! hair-styling stations! food! makeup demos!) it didn’t feel overly crowded at all. If you couldn’t make it…here are a few pics from throughout the day.

Doesn’t Rae’s Veronica Lake-like hair look so lovely? I wish I had taken before and after pics of the racks because honest to goodness, we barely had anything to bring back to the shop at the end of the day. Many, many thanks to Becca and Jen from The Hive for inviting us to be part of their celebration and of course, much love to each of our wonderfully loyal shoppers. We can’t wait to see you all again next month!

heads up: the hive salon’s one-year anniversary party

Did you hear that Mighty Swell’s popping up at The Hive Salon’s one-year anniversary party tomorrow? In case you’re unfamiliar, The Hive‘s a gem of a salon, owned and operated by two vintage-loving sisters, Jen and Becca. Know for their commitment to organic products and forward-thinking green business practices, these ladies are setting the bar when it comes to eco-friendly salons in the Twin Cities. And the party they’re throwing tomorrow’s going to be so fun! In addition to a curated collection of spring-y vintage from Mighty Swell, our friends at Find Furnish will also be on hand, selling mid-century modern bar carts and drink ware. The lovely ladies of Hive will also be hooking guests up with complimentary retro hair and makeup touch-ups. (I totally plan on getting there an hour early so they can doll me up.) And last, but certainly not least, the party also kicks off Hive’s three-week long food drive benefiting the Emergency Foodshelf Network. They’re aiming to collect 300 pounds of food in 21 short days, and to get off on the right foot, anniversary party guests will be rewarded with a raffle ticket for every non-perishable food item they bring. Raffle prizes include French Meadow Bakery & Cafe and Stanley’s Northeast Bar Room gift certificates, fancy hair products from Simply Organic Beauty, salon gift cards and more. I told you these gals are an inspiration! You can learn all the details about the party (and RSVP!) right here. I  hope to see you there!

ice cream for dinner

I glanced through my nearly empty fridge after work and made the very adult-like decision to have an ice cream sundae for dinner. And, if I’m honest, I needed an excuse to put one of my new rose bowls to use. I scooped up this set of four at the Goodwill in Virginia (Minnesota) for just 25 cents a pop. (I noticed them immediately because they match my favorite glasses!) Four bowls for $1…I’m going to miss those small town thrift-store prices.

I hope your Friday night is off to an equally decadent start!

store review: stone soup thrift shop

If you’re looking to shop a squeaky clean, well-organized thrift store, Stone Soup isn’t for you. Hidden away in the quaint riverside town of St. Paul Park, this thrift can be summarized with just one word: dingy. However, their prices are low-low-low. So while picking your way through the labyrinth of questionably organized, somewhat stinky rooms may take a bit of time, you might find yourself a gem or two!

WHAT’S GOOD

Glassware: If I was looking to stock up on ’70s-style glassware—think amber-colored dishes, green textured bowls, yellow votives—for a centerpiece or event, I would for sure come here first.

Free table: In the front room of the shop sits a table full of stuff that’s free. Definitely always worth a once over.

WHAT’S MEH

Clothes: Smallish selection of frumpy junk from brands like Sag Harbor, White Stag, etc. If you do happen to find some things that catch your eye, the a la carte price list for clothes is up by the register, but for just $8, you can fill a grocery bag full any day of the week.

Shoes: Again, the selection is small and most pairs are in super shoddy shape.

Furniture: Every single time I’ve visited this store the furniture room stinks like paint, leading me to the conclusion that purchasing furniture from this shop would be a really bad idea.

Where does the money raised here go? To the Basic Needs Action Team, a nonprofit that serves the disadvantaged and low-income community. In 2011, $147,294 worth of Stone Soup’s merchandise was given away for free to families in need—a whopping 57 percent of the store’s entire inventory!

And now here’s where I share a few of my favorite finds from this shop.

On my last visit, I found two hand-tooled leather handbags for $3-4 a piece. I polished them up with some leather cleaner when I got home and they are looking sharp.
As of last year, I’ve instituted a strict buying freeze on afghans, but for some reason, I couldn’t pass this one up. I love how the petals on the flowers fold over—so cute! How cheery is this dimpled planter? I’m thinking of popping some succulents into it and giving it to a friend.

the beauty thrifter is in!

Today over on Beauty Bets, I outlined my top three reasons for getting Naked…Urban Decay’s Naked2 Palette, to be exact. That’s it up there on my hotel-room vanity. The palette (along with my flavor-of-the-week mascara) is the only eye makeup I needed to tote with me on this trip. Do check out the post if you have a moment!

iron range adventures

Although I’ve only been up here six-or-so hours, I’m already fairly sure that these next few days in the Iron Range are going to be fun. If you haven’t visited this part of the country before, you’re missing out on some serious gorgeousness. The pit mines are so spectacular, I sought out two different scenic overlooks so I could really soak up the views. I can’t honestly remember the last time I saw water so blue…and don’t get me started on the sky.

Well, I’m off to fire up the whirlpool in my hotel room (!!!) and then catch up on some sleep. My first meeting tomorrow’s at 8 a.m.

clickin’ around, vol. 31

I am making one of these air-plant displays as soon as humanly possible. I pass by loads of beautiful frames at the thrifts and now I’ll finally have a way to put one of ’em to use.

Former Sassy editor and Lucky founder Kim France has started a blog aimed at 30-something ladies, and of course, it’s a must read.

On a scale of 1 to 10, my desire to learn how to sew went from an 8 to a 9 after seeing Madeline’s refashioned floral pants. So cute.

Most boudoir sessions most often leaves me feeling embarrassed for the girl. This session—a deployment gift for the subject’s hubby—is an enchanting, tasteful exception.

Every time these gals say something negative about their bodies, they put $1 in a jar. Also known as an effing genius idea.

So John Mayer covered Lana Del Rey and I shockingly, I don’t hate it. I guess sometimes two wrongs really can make a right.

And, speaking of stars I never dreamed of mentioning on this here blog, Audrina Partridge (you know, from The Hills?), got a makeunder courtesy of xoJane and I couldn’t stop staring. Why is it so weird to see celebs sans makeup?!

And with that, I’m off to dig a couple pairs of tights out of storage. I’m heading to the Iron Range for a few days for a work assignment and it’s chilly up there!

recently thrifted, ’80s-era minneapolis-st paul mags

I need more magazines like I need a hole in the head, but when I saw these circa 1981 Mpls St. Paul mags at an estate sale last week, I just had to pick them up. And I’m so glad I did! From the advertisements ($179.95 for a Sony Walkman!) to the hilariously atrocious fashion spreads, flipping through them is like taking a trip back in time. Narrowing down what spreads to share was tough, but here are a few of my favorite pages.

Apparently Dayton’s thought hiring Hitler’s doppelganger to do a little modeling for them was a good idea…

Lounging in a saran-wrap hammock—every woman’s dream…

I would look sad too if I had to wear a giant glittery French horn on my head and hold hands with a man wearing more blush than me…

Haircuts at Horst and Friends salon in 1980 = $12.50. Today = $75.

So much lamé going on in the early ’80s…

At just 50 cents a piece, I consider picking up these babies the best $2 I’ve spent in ages. Have you found anything brag-worthy at the thrifts lately?

As far as I’m concerned, big hair is the best hair. So today on Beauty Bets, I’m sharing a few of my favorite drugstore products and styling tools that I use on the regular to achieve ultra-big looks. I have so much to say about huge hair, next week I’ll be spilling some tried-and-true teasing methods and sharing links to vids that helped me hone my back-combing skills.

I hope you enjoy!
