what goes around comes around: mix & match nails

(source)

I can’t help but roll my eyes a tiny bit when I witness arguments about who started what fashion or beauty trend when or who did it first. If you love, study and shop for vintage like I do, you already know the secret: Nothing’s really ever “new.” In the spirit of celebrating the resurrection and reinterpretation of vintage trends, I thought I’d start calling out examples when I see ’em. Sounds fun right?

I thought I’d start with a beauty trend I love, the mix and match mani. The gorgeous “stained glass” nails pictured above were photographed by Saul Leiter for the November, 1960 edition of Bazaar. Now, 50 years later, you can barely scroll through a beauty blog without seeing a reference to ombre or mix & match manis. (Ex. one, two & three.)

I guess JT was right.

I’m off to primp for a very overdue lady date with this sassy lass. I can’t wait!

the beauty thrifter is in

Today over on Beauty Bets, I shared a bunch of beauty-related, gift-y DIYs I want to make this holiday season. The bows pictured above (c/o Oh So Lovely via My Girl Thursday) didn’t make it into the story, but I really love them. So, please go check out that how-to too. (Too. To. Tutu!) I figure if anything’s going to entice me to dust off the ole’ glue gun, it’s making pretty (pink) bows for my girls. For more fun budget-friendly crafty ideas like this, pop on over to Beauty Bets and read my post.

Also…I hope your Wednesdays are wonderful!

DIY day at beauty bets

Do y’all remember John Frieda’s beach blonde sea salt spray? I rocked that stuff out like crazy in high school! Sadly, the geniuses at JF discontinued it eons ago. (Bring it baaaaack!) Happily, I’m a make-do kinda gal and have been whipping up my own version in my kitchen for ages. It’s ridiculously easy to crank out at home and costs next to nothing. And really, why would you pay more than a few bucks for glorified salt water!? Anyway, you’ll have to hop on over to Beauty Bets today to read my whole how to. I hope you enjoy!

how to: make your own bubble bath

Researching for yesterday’s Beauty Bets post re: making bubble bath at home, I tried out a couple different methods and recipes. This recipe for foaming vanilla-honey bath, found over at Real Simple, is so easy and delicious I just had to share it here. Spoiler alert: I’m totally giving jars of this stuff out come Christmas time!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

1 cup light oil (almond, canola or sunflower will do)

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup mild liquid hand or body soap (I used Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Mild Baby Soap, available at Target, Whole Foods and co-ops.)

1 tablespoon vanilla (preferably organic)

HOW TO MAKE

1. In a clean clear container, mix together the liquid soap, oil, honey and vanilla.

To use, pour 1/4 cup or so under running water as you fill the tub. (This recipe makes enough for about eight baths.)

Enjoy!

[closed] giveaway: win a bottle of by elizabeth dehn face spray!

As you might already know, I’m honored to be a part of the blogging team over at Beauty Bets, an award-winning beauty website created by Elizabeth Dehn. I can hardly believe it, but it’s been nearly a year since my first post! Time certainly flies when you’re having fun. Especially when your definition of fun means test-driving a budget beauty products day in and day out!

This year’s been full of entrepreneurial adventures and growth for both Elizabeth and me, but one MEGA HUGE ACHIEVEMENT that deserves extra-special attention is the debut of Elizabeth’s eponymous skincare line: By Elizabeth Dehn. Unsurprisingly, the collection is ALL killer and NO filler. Juicy, nutritious ingredients and effective formulas, finished off with the prettiest of packaging. Also not surprising? The heaping amount of praise the collection continues to rake in.

One product that has Bets running back to bottling plant already is her Face Spray, which I think should be renamed Change-Your-Day Spray. Just a quick mist of this heavenly scented stuff can quite honestly turn my entire outlook around! Besides being an instant mood-booster, the addictive spray’s infused with organic sweet orange and melissa essential oils and packed with antioxidants. With every spritz, you feel as if you’re doing something good for your thirsty complexion—because you ARE!

Most generously, Bets hooked me up with a bottle of her magical face spray to give away to one of you! To enter to win, here’s what you have to do:

1. Be a U.S. resident.
2. Follow @byelizabethdehn on Twitter or sign up to receive the Beauty Bets e-newsletter. (Doing either should take you no more than five seconds, so don’t be intimidated!)
3. Leave a quick comment on this post telling us why you could use a mood-boost in a bottle along with a valid email address. Show me you tweeted about this giveaway, and I’ll give you two shots at winning!

This giveaway closes on Thursday, June 16th at 8 p.m. CST.

I wish you luck, y’all!

beauty bets guest post: bargain stocking stuffers

{Photo of pin-up beauty Anita Ekberg found here.}

I’m soooo excited about the post I did for Beauty Bets this week. It’s a round-up of affordable stocking stuffers—every item costs $6 or less! I was super picky about what I included, and whittled it down to nine products that I really, truly love. Including…my favorite hair product that came out in 2010, a classic red nail polish every gal should own, the eco-friendly makeup bag I tote around with me everywhere and a glittery eyeliner that should cost way more than it does ($5.29). And a whole bunch of other sweet gifties.

In other words, I think you’ll dig it.

Another bonus, everything I picked is for sale at Target, CVS, Walgreens, etc., so if you’ve procrastinated like me, you can easily find any of the products I mentioned right up until the holiday. Anyway, stop on over and check it out if you like.
