remember duane allman

source

Today, October 29th, marks the 39th anniversary of Duane Allman’s death. He died at the age of 24 in a motorcycle accident. Duane is, hands down, my favorite guitar player, and even though his life was cut short, he left us a lot of imperishable music. I’m going to jam the shit of his must-have anthology today, and of course, some Derek & Dominos.

you, Duane.
You are greatly missed.

Heads up beautiful readers!

Wanna learn how to snag deeply discounted beauty services at some of my Twin City favorite salons and spas? I’m talking 50 percent off waxing, Brazilian blow-outs, hair cuts, highlights, dye jobs, manis, massages…you name it! Are you all nodding your heads yes, yes, yes!

Well, hop on over to Beauty Bets today to read about Yelp’s  “Hot on Yelp” promotion, happening next week, November 1-7. Trust me, these deals are too, too, good to pass up. (For readers outside of Minnesota, the promo is being offered around the country.) Next week, I’m looking forward to a 75-minute massage here & a Brazilian here. All right, so I’m not really looking forward to the wax, but I am happy to not be paying full price for it! Click here to get all the deets!

blogroll love: kissssing

Hello.

My name is Meghan, and I just fell in love with a blog called kissssing. Truth: I’m a sucker for anything romantic. Including, of course, making out. Which is why this mushy blog gets special attention whenever it pops up in my reader.

kissssing

On it, you won’t find dating tips or advice for making your marriage better. Just sweet, sentimental photos of people getting all lovey-dovey, with a love-related quote or lyric inserted here and there.
In a word: perfection.

Jim Folsom, Governor of Alabama 1947-1951

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

My Baptist grandma didn’t lie: Dancing leads to kissing.

Linda & Paul McCartney

Making out while afloat in inner-tubes, beer in hand?
This couple rules!

And, since we’re talking romance, check out this to-do list handwritten by Johnny Cash. Judging by item no. 2, it seems that Johnny, too, recognized the importance smoochin’ has in a long-lasting love affair.

P.S. This gem is up for auction on December 3 & 4, along with a whole slew of Johnny’s personal items. Wouldn’t this, framed up, make for the most romantic present EVER? I would m-e-l-t with happiness if I found this under my Christmas tree. Sigh…a girl can dream, right?

P.S. Thanks to When You Awake for the heads up on the Cash estate sale.

the couch that got away

Sweethearts!

See the couch in this photo? It haunts my dreams.

I know this has happened to you: You’re out thrifting,  and you find something great. But for whatever reason (you have to pee, your cart’s full, you’re out of money, you’re out of time), you decide to pass it up. Time passes, and then it dawns on you: What the HELL were you thinking? You now need that sweater/jacket/album/necklace/picture frame worse than ANYTHING in the world. You hustle back to the store with a faint fleeting hope your object of desire is still there, waiting to go home with you, and of course, it’s not.

This happened to me this year, with a couch. I was at Bibles for Missions in Crystal, and spotted this cheerful floral patterned vintage couch. It was in primo condition and on top of that, the beauty was matched with incredible comfort. The price? $35. I talked myself out of buying it because I didn’t think it would fit it in my car and also, because of the small fact that I really, actually, don’t need a couch. Two legit excuses,  both of which I wish I had written off. I realized my mistake later that night (probably when I was sitting on my uncomfortable IKEA sofa), and the next day, I called the shop. You know how it ends. Of course, it had been sold.

Fast-forward to last night’s ritual pre-bedtime blog reading AND I SEE “MY” COUCH. Talk about reopening a fresh wound! Gah! How perfect that pattern is! How great would those colors look in my living room! How nice it would be to have a couch that I could actually nap on! DAMN IT!!! I wish I had snapped it up.

Sigh.

All photos (and persumably, the couch) belong to the talented leah bernhardt. Photos were featured on the always inspiring Here Comes the Sun.

MORAL OF THE STORY:If you find something really, really exceptional, think twice (or maybe three times) before passing it over.

three doable diys, no. 2

Hi hi hi!

I don’t know about you all, but I get discouraged by DIY projects with lengthy lists of materials and long, detailed directions. Projects that have an unfussy list of materials and don’t require a mammoth investment of time? Yeah, those are way more up my alley. Even better if they can be made from stuff found, where else? At the thrift store.

Here are three I’ve liked lately that fit the bill…

Even though I kind of dislike hate the game itself (two words: childhood overload!), I think these Scrabble-tile push pins are too cute. All you need are some thrifted Scrabble tiles, push pins and a hot glue gun.

Jill from Lune Vintage comes up with the best DIYs. Take this ’70s-inspired slasher scarf, for example. Materials needed? A thrifted T (make sure it’s 5-10% lycra or spandex) and a sharp pair of scissors.

When it came to the over-sized pompoms donned by the models in Sonia Rykiel’s fall 2011 show, it was love, love, love at first sight. In fact, I saved this pic in my inspiration files way back in March!

So, imagine my delight, when nearly eight months later, I found this cute Dutch blogger, making her own mighty pom headbands at home! Wouldn’t one of these in cream, black or red be the perfect whimsical addition to a holiday party get-up? Yeah, I think so too.

Quick and simple DIYs. Do you dig?

I hope y’all have had lovely Mondays!

wish list: a blue-eyed kitty

Last week, my roommate moved out of my house, taking her fluffy cat with her. Ever since (OK, even before), I’ve been enchanted with the idea of adopting a little blue-eyed, white-furred kitten. And by enchanted, I really just mean obsessed. It doesn’t help that pics of cutie cats keep popping up in my blog roll left and right.

I haven’t brought myself to start actually looking at rescue websites. My willpower. It’s not that strong.

Are you suckers for cute kitties? Or are you all more puppy people?
